I am sure that this site will help you out, as it answers a lot of questions about Ravenloft. http://www.fraternityofshadows.com/Main_Page.html Best of luck to you, and I hope you enjoy the Land of Mists. Oh, and just click on the Study for the answer to your questions about the Realm. |

It was published throught the '90s by TSR/WotC before third edition, after which it was licenced to White Wolf who recently decided to return the rights. |
#4rotipherOct 04, 2005 13:10:48 | Ravenloft is also the name of a 1st Edition AD&D module (I6) which introduced the character of Strahd von Zarovich (the Ravenloft setting's "iconic character" and D&D's most infamous vampire), and was published in the mid-80s. It's also the name of Strahd's castle, the map of which raised the bar for module-map quality back when I6 first appeared. You don't need that old module to play in the setting, but be aware that the term "Ravenloft" is sometimes used in those two contexts, not just for gamers' discussions of the world as a whole. Note that the inhabitants of the Ravenloft setting don't call their world "Ravenloft", any more than the inhabitants of Ansalon call their world "Dragonlance". Ravenloft's natives call their world "the Land of Mists", in reference to the supernatural fogbanks that enclose their homelands and work an eerie influence over their lives. Metagame-wise, Ravenloft is a game setting in which hack-and-slash approaches simply get you killed, where defeating one's opposition (or even identifying it correctly) requires careful investigation and research, and where the easiest solution to a problem isn't necessarily the right one. It's a thinking players' game, driven by atmosphere and in-character motivations, that demands a lot of its DMs in the way of characterization, layered plots, deception and mood-setting. In short, it's NOT a world for the casual kick-in-the-door gaming group, but the rewards of its depth and drama are enormous for the right style of gamer. |
