Anyone noticed in the books that the chief of Ogo village is called, and written as, Urga-Zoltapl and not Urga Zoltapl?

Its as if Zoltapl were not a family name. Plus, the commander of Urik's halfling infantry is called Mulgan-dur-gan of Zoltapl, as if he bears the "of ..." name of whoever is his chieftain.

Could it be that, 20 years from now, the commander of Urik's halfling infantry could become a great chieftain in his own right and send his own commander out, and that commander would bear his name like this? : Bhla-bhla-bhla of Dur-gan

What does it all mean? Is the name of the tribe - through identifaction of its chieftain's name - part of all halfing's names?

Could it be that every halfing has 2 family names, one for the mother, one for the father, and a "of ..." name that denotes the name of the chieftain? In which case, upon becoming a chieftain, the halfing loses his former "of ..." name since he no longer has a chieftain and chooses one of his family names to become his sole family name and be used by all the halfings he leads?

For example:
1. Chieftain's name is Urga-Zoltapl. Citizens call themselves Bhla-bhla-bhla of Zoltapl.
2. If a citizen called Mir-an-jan of Zoltapl becomes a chieftain he loses the "of Zoltapl" bit and chooses -an as a family name and the name of his chieftainhood, so he's now known as Mir-An. Citizens call themselves Bhla-bhla-bhla of An.

To this I would would mostly agree, but add that this would be a more informal approach to naming. Those close to the individual halfling would not use the clan/family/whatever name

Sounds good to me. Very observant of you to notice.

I'm thinking someone who wants to write some project on halflings could use this, but obviously this naming scheme is not used for all halflings TSR created, the most obvious one being plain Nok.

Sage is doing a thing on halflings- Guardians of the Forest Ridge. I will be doing stats of major or important NPC's, but he is the creative mind behind it.
