..... I know the supplements are under sov-press, I've seen quite a few at my gaming shop and they're pricey. I was wondering which ones you guys think are the most useful or neccesary to running a quality game. If anyone can give me a clue to what books are for what and how helpful they are, I'd sure be thankful

You absolutely need the Dragonlance Campaign Setting in order to play some of the base classes. Age of Mortals is also a very important book in that regard. (At the Dragonlance.com store, they have a bundle of the two that they're selling, or were selling, at one point.) That being said, many of the other SP books refine some of those classes at the same time, so if you have a particular area of interest that would be a good place to look as well.

It would help if you told us in which era (aka "Age of..") you plan to play.

I think War of the Lance is an essential. Not only does it detail the classic era of DL gaming, it also has great PrC's such as the handler and gnomish tinker, which I feel are essentials.

Towers of High Sorcery is good for wizard characters, having rules on running the Test, a slightly revised Wizard of High Sorcery prestige class, and lots of good PrC's, some of which work for both sorcerers and wizards.

Holy Orders of the Stars is much the same for cleric characters, giving detail on each god's Holy Order, a PrC for each god (minus the gods of magic), and so on and so forth.

Those would be my top three pics beyond the DLCS. Age of Mortals is also good, but note that the novels have progressed some past that point. Despite that, it's a good reference for the modern day.

Hope that helps.

DriveThruRPG has a number of out of print Sovereign Press Dragonlance products available for purchase as PDF files. This is the easiest way to get hold of Towers of High Sorcery, unless you can find a copy somewhere in the distribution channels (my local Barnes & Noble has all of these books, for example).

My suggestion for "must haves" mirrors that which folks here have already suggested, but I would also throw in the Bestiary of Krynn if you're looking for a lot of Dragonlance-specific monsters and challenges, and the Dragonlance DM's Screen (with its 32-page booklet) which partners well with other published screens.

Cheers,
Cam

war of the lance, classic era or not, is the essential DL book for gaming, in any age, with any system. Why? because it's finally the gazetteer we've been waiting for. Everything else can be extrapolated from it. WotL is the only DL book you need, period.

Yeah, but you don't agree with half of it.

Towers, the Bestiary and Holy Orders are all useful because they cover multiple eras. I usually suggest folks pick up one of the era sourcebooks, the above three supplements, and go for it.

Bah. Everyone knows that my views of DL are so far off from the mainstream that it totally doesnt matter. what i agree with has nothing to do with the sheer readability of the supplement =)
