Ideas for Orthand and the Black Sand Raiders

So, I was at work today and this idea came to me. Nothing major mind you, but I still wanted to share it.

You see, I've always felt that there was "something" different about Zeburon (sp? the leader of the Black Sand Raiders). Something that wasn't covered well in 2nd ed. With 3rd ed., however, I think there might be a "fix" of sorts.

First off, it seems reasonable to me that he would've aquired the "Gray-touched" template. So this is something I think should be added to his 3rd ed. build.

Secondly, seeing as how in most campaigns Zeb will have kicked the bucket(curtousy of any PCs playing through Dragon Crown), , I don't see it unlikely (especially if he's already touched by death) for him to become undead. With this being the case, I'd like to see him use his undead status to aid him in further uncovering the secrets of Orthand. Also noting that the tunnels below the main camp should now be rid of most baddies he should have no trouble getting further access to the tunnels once blocked off by rubble.

So what secrets lie within the ruins of Orthand? What ancient artifacts might he uncover? What ancient evils might he unleash?

This is your cue to put forth some ideas... :P

I always thought that messed up looking helmet he wore should have been magical, despite his writeup saying otherwise.

But yeah, once I read his entry not too long ago I've been wanting to do something unique with him.

I'm in contact with squidfur- and we're working the problems.

We're still wondering what kind of usefulness the gauntlets and helmet could possibly have. The supplements clearly let the possibility hang in the air that they could be magical (but if they are, its not apparent and Zeburon is not saying).

Besides their magical nature, why does he wear them all the time? They seem to cover some disfigurement to his hands and head...from what?

He could just be a loony, and convinced they are magical

Perhaps they are, just not in the way he thinks. He believes they protect him or (given his procivities), help him kill more people; what they actually do is store power from those he kills - the helmet takes their Psionic power, while the gloves vampirically gain power from the blood spilled. All this power is being funnelled into something living beneath the Black Sands... Or perhaps something living in the helmet itelf...

As an aside, ever see Hawk The Slayer? A truly awful, awful film, but had Jack Palance as The Evil Overlord, who was chasing after our eponymous hero for revenge for being horribly disfigured. He also hid his face under a helmet, and was advised by a mage who did something rather ill-defined to help with the pain.

Now, as I said, it was an awful, awful movie, but I just couldn't help wondering - what if Mr. E. Overlord was wrong? Can you just imagine the moment when he confronts the man who disfigured him, tears away the mask to reveal - he's absolutely fine! The guy's ranting about how his face has been ruined forever, and you're staring at his perfect baby-smooth face and thinking... "Dear heaven, I thought he was crazy before - but he's really nuts!"

Now, Hawk The Slayer being a truly awful awful film, that didn't happen. But wouldn't it be cool?

Sounds like the Tom Cruise movie Vanilla Sky- now that was a twisted piece of work!

i always has the helmet work as a magical funnel of sorts. i had it that the deflier (i forget his name) was the tue leader, and that the helmet allowed the wizard to control the poor sap (if those exist on athas). one of the interesting things for me was that the helmet could be used to cast spells through, so that even id the wizard were not around, that he could still see and hear the battle, and could cast spells through the mask when necessary. in my campaign the only reason it has not happened yet is cause it wasn't needed. no sense tipping your hand if you don't need to. plus many magics can subtly aid the raiders, without them knowing what was happening. yes, a fireball could be cast, but that would raise suspicion. plus, wasn't there already a raaig down there? what did you have in mind for him? maybe he gets to control Zuberon?

It doesn't look like Fevil controls Zeburon, or that the raaig controls either. But any one of those persons may have given its loyalty to the other in exchange for power, or life*, as part of a shadowy deal.

* If you're about to die, you may pledge the reminder of your life for a chance to live.
