#1sbwilsonNov 30, 2005 15:51:00 | I recently started a play-by-post campaign based in Karameikos. While I am not looking for players, I thought I'd post the link to the forum where we are playing so other Mystara fans can follow along if they want. None of the players are familiar with Mystara, so it will be a bit more of an exploration type than what I'm used to. Everything is new to them :D . We are starting with B5 "The Horror on the Hill" but it might take a bit before we actually get into the adventure proper. We'll be starting on the day of the Shearing Ceremony. Anyway, feel free to visit. You don't have to register to read the posts, but you can't post anything yourself - so if you would like to make comments or post encouragement (this is my first PbP experience), you can do so here. #5sbwilsonDec 05, 2005 13:51:46 | Well, the Shearing Ceremony is over and it looks like we might get over to The Hill before this week ends. I have some very gung-ho players and some that do not post as often as I would like (even though I can see that they are logging in frequently). Anyone have any ideas how to encourage them to post? As I mentioned, I'm still new to the PbP format and still learning the tricks-of-the-trade, so to speak. Would it be acceptable to attach a small xp award to each post players make? |
#6fanchergwDec 05, 2005 17:30:53 | SB, While I'm strictly a Mystara novice, I have been playing PbP steadily for over a decade now. The issue I see with your proposal is that it may cause some unexpected results. For example, a more-loquacious player might break what should be one post into multiple posts, just to get the bonus. One approach I've seen is to give an award based on total size of posts. Unfortunately, this just encourages those who are inclinded and have to the time to dominate the game even more. Those who are naturally less verbose or simply don't have the time end up feeling short-changed and resentful. Here's my suggestion: Specify the posting rate that you feel is reasonable to maintain the flow of the game, i.e. X posts every Y days. Each player that posts at that rate gets a bonus of Z xp's for that Y days. Note that only "substantive", in-character posts count ("Me too," doesn't count as substantive). There's a certain amount of judgement required here, but if you communicate openly with the players and let them know what is expected - and assuming they trust you as a GM - then you shouldn't have a significant problems.
