#2neilthrunDec 04, 2005 15:33:56 | YES!!! I AGREE! There was a few spelljammer refrences in Lords of Madness, talking about the illithid Nautaloids and neogi Mindspiders. But no rules were given. The book also makes reffrence to the Ebon Mirror, but I can't remember if thats a planescape or a spelljammer refrence. |

Wizards of the Coast has a policy of minimising the number of official campaign settings that they'll support - they publish the Forgotten Realms and Eberron to cater to the two main flavours of "traditional" and "contemporary" fantasy popular in their playerbase, and probably looks favourably on Sovereign Press' publishing Dragonlance because the novels still sell very well for them (the novels being the main reason why the Forgotten Realms were chosen to be the supported Third Edition setting rather than Greyhawk). There are (or were) other "official" settings, but Ravenloft is no longer being published and Kalamar was never an official D&D setting published by either TSR or Wizards of the Coast - rather, Kenzer obtained the rights to publish an "official" D&D setting (as opposed to d20 or OGL) of their own invention. There are "official" fan websites for Planescape, Birthright and Dark Sun as I understand it. Maybe even for Spelljammer. |

Spelljamming ships have been referenced in several other books now, particularly Lords of Madness but also a few others. Much of the Planescape core setting was updated and released over the course of several volumes, notably Manual of the Planes and the Planar Handbook. Perhaps something similar with be done for the Spelljammer mechanics, with a release of a single Spacefarers' Handbook and nothing more. |
#5nightdruidDec 07, 2005 7:16:52 | YES!!! I AGREE! The Ebon Mirror is not a SJ reference. IIRC that's referencing a device used by the real-world historic figure Nostrodomus in his perdictions about the future. It is said he had a black mirror he'd stare into for hours, and it would give him visions of the future, which he wrote down. |
#6zombiegleemaxDec 07, 2005 20:11:09 | I would love to see some kind of official Spelljammer rules release. The closest they've come is a few pages of quick and dirty rules in a Dragon magazine. Just enough bits to understand that it's meat, but not enough to chew on . . . As for a fully supported campaign, I would just be happy with a well fleshed out sourcebook. If WotC doesn't want to do it, too bad they don't license out the name so some other publisher can. |
