In the city

Surcus walked past the bridge. Glancing across the void to the next island he saw new types of creatures, yellowish in form, it seemed. Tall, thin and nasty-looking. He moved on in disgust.

So, the portal had changed again. New creatures always entered this new home of his, something that never could stop to discomfort him. He could get used to neverending twilight, the everpresent blue-and-grey Sentinels, and the tall blue-skinned ones that seemed to own the city, but these constant new races..even truly evil ones! The entire idea of living on the "planes" was new to him.

Being born on the so-called Prime Oerth, he was mostly used to humans. Humans of all types, that is true, he had seen them all, black, red, pale and purple, but still humans. He didn`t really mind other races, as long as they were behaving, but he couldn`t get used to them. Being a paladin was never easy...so many things to do, and not do. He used to see it as a privilege, but he couldn`t do it anymore. The order had refused him to marry C., and he had to give them up...at least in practice. Little had he known that it would necessitate him moving here, to this city, far from everything he had ever known.

Another bridge was crossed. He would hate them eventually, he knew that. Perhaps he should start flying instead, relying on his new spells. It wasn`t easy to do so, whatever he did he still saw himself as a paladin, not a spellcaster. He could study the magic, always being the curious one, but actually rely on spells? Naa. His strength was still in his holy faith, his sword arm, his unique connection with Heironeus, no matter what his oerthly order had to say about it. Oh, well. He couldn`t complain.

Heaven`s Tankard. The sign fluttered as he glanced at it. Strange. No wind was ever to be had here in this magical place, but it still moved. He would have to see into that later...perhaps some interesting magic spell? Or even...truly divine magic?? The members of the Godkissed always claimed close relationships with deities, but much of it seemed vague at best. He entered the brightness of the tavern.

Always so immensely bright here. The creatures(he couldn`t call them otherwise, seeing that they often looked rather inhuman) that claimed divine ancestors seemed to always beam brighter than anyone else he ever saw, whatever that really meant. Common people seemed mesmerized more often or not by this, though, watching the crowds of people just eerily staring at their chosen idol there. The faction(if one can call it that) had readily accepted him as a member, seeing his marriage with a demigoddess as a proof of his "divinity", or something. He wasn`t really sure what they were thinking about, but he liked having a place to stay. The temple of Heironeus was an option, of course, he wasn`t a fallen paladin(at least not yet), the deity still bestowed his blessings on him, even after the marriage. But he couldn`t take it. So many explanations to do, and so many looks...they couldn`t seem to understand even the slightest bit why he would give up his holiness for wizardry. It was better staying here, where he could be alone if he wanted, and accepted as long as he wanted. Attention was his if he wanted, some bragging or just appearing here once with C. would make him a constant object of admiration for the commoners here, and probably give him more clout in the politics of the organization too. But he could do without.

Vellella greeted him with a wave, as she always did. He knew she probably just wanted even more allies in her political maneuverings of the faction, but didn`t care much. He genuinely liked the elven wizardess, feeling a kinship and deep attraction he couldn`t explain properly. Being born on the Prime was one thing, of course, and being a wizard, but really...so many differences, too. Even though, he could never forsake his wife. Being married to a deity of lust could be trying at times, of course, but also rewarding. He loved her, anyway, and had a belief that the feeling was reciprocated.

Crossing the great hall of the main room seemed to take forever. So many people, so many languages...there he was through. Breathing a sigh of relief, he entered the private rooms in the back. Much less crowdy here, only proper members of the Kissed Ones could enter this area. He found his room and fell down on the big bed at once. Such a tiring day...and more would await, he was sure. Sleeping before the minute had passed, not even removing the armour(he`d certainly regret part in the morning!), the paladin/wizard dreamt of better days...and hopefully better days ahead in the city of Union.

By the way, one thing I didn`t think of....what would poor Surcus do in Sigil? He could never bring his wife there...she is a demipower, after all, although a very weak one(perhaps rank 1?)
