This was another question I had concerning the Keys of Destiny trilogy. Obviously, the artifact Huma's Lance is meant to be used by the characters, at least for a time. It is constantly referenced in the material, along with the holy short sword, as helping to make certain battles easier, and such.

My question is, how is it to be used? Physically, that is. I always envisioned the dragon lances, especially major ones, as very big lances requiring a mount on the dragon's saddle to be swiveled effectively, as they are just too large and ungainly otherwise. How is it a character could be expected to use Huma's Lance then on it's own? Am I mistaken about the physical size, or is there something else to consider?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Im letting the Solamnic Knight in my campaign use it as a melee piercing weapon with 10 foot reach, however if an enemy closes within that 10 feet he cannot damage them with it. He also cannot attack through a "friendly" square with it nor am I allowing him to take attacks of opportunity as its too ungainly. He can set it against a chagre per the standard rule for lances and if he asks I will let him use it on horseback. After thinking about it and the way I picture the DragonLances description this seems to be the best way I could make it work mechanically.

So you think it would work as the Lance is described on page 118 of the PHB? That makes sense, thanks.

Yes. All dragonlances are lances. So, use the standard rules for them other than the additional benefits they gain from being magical.

So Cam,
Do we then just assume that a DragonLance is the same size as a standard lance from the PHB?? If so are the Dragons of the DL setting really the size of horses?? I'm just trying to rationalize the size inconsistency. It seems realistic to expect a DragonLance to be a lot bigger than a standard lance, or am I totally off base. Any response is appreciated.

The War of the Lance sourcebook introduces a mounted dragonlance variant, which is basically the same thing only twice as long. It requires a proper saddle in order to avoid a -4 penalty to attacks. You can estimate from this that the mounted dragonlance has a longer reach (15 ft, the same as the bite reach for a Huge dragon) and cannot be used on foot, if you like. Of course, the standard rules for a dragonlance still give the rider of a dragon an excellent reach compared to the Large dragon he's on (young adult brass, bronze, copper, and silver dragons being the most common mounts), equalling the dragon's bite reach. So I wouldn't want to mess with the usual rules.
