#1Band2Feb 07, 2006 11:43:27 | Here is my listing of the food of the Tyr Region. I have searched through all of the Dark Sun accessories which I have, and found any mention of food or something that is edible. For each item I recorded the description given in the text. While below is not an exact quote it does give the relevant information. Some entries are sparse, because not much was given. Others are longer, having multiple sources that mention them. Occasionally I have added my comments to clarify or explain something. These are written in italics. Otherwise I wanted to refrain from adding my own ideas to the list, to make the list as Dark Sun canon as possible. I did not include pricing, because most of the items mentioned rarely had an exact price mentioned. I did try to note if certain products were expensive or cheap if it was stated in the text. To determine the classification, I used the following. Expensive is anything that is only part of a noble or rich merchant’s diet. Cheap is anything that can be eaten by slaves or common people. Sometimes there was no mention either way and so I did not include any designation on these products. I did make some guesses here. If the text mentioned the an item was a noble treat then I labeled it expensive. If it said, a product was eaten by slaves, then it was labeled cheap. The listing is divided into three sections, Meat & animal products, Fruits and Vegetables, Other, and Beverages. I will be posting each section separately. Also I will put together a list of the Dark Sun accessories that I used to create this list. In that case anyone who has the ones that I missed can add to this list. |
#2Band2Feb 07, 2006 11:46:07 | Ants Sugar-coated ants are a sweet snack. (A Little Knowledge) Aprig Aprig meat is succulent and has a faint nutty flavor. Female aprigs can be milked, but the milk is not good quality. (Monstrous Compendium II: Terrors Beyond Tyr) Baazrag (Cheap) Baazrag meat is prepared in bits on a skewer and grilled over an open flame. Slabs of the meat are also smoked to prepare for journeys across the desert. (City-State of Tyr) One baazrag provides 25 pounds of meat. The fluid sac on its back contains 1-4 pints of water which is tainted by the baazarag’s poison. (Monstrous Compendium II: Terrors Beyond Tyr) A boneclaw can be eaten but it is tough and stringy meat. One boneclaw provides up to 125 pounds of meat. (Monstrous Compendium II: Terrors Beyond Tyr) Carru One carru can provide 200-250 pounds of meat for consumption. Female carrus can also be milked, providing thick creamy milk. A female carru products 3 gallons of milk a day. The milk only keeps for a few days. All carru have a fluid sac behind their heads which contains 3-9 pints of water. (Monstrous Compendium II: Terrors Beyond Tyr) Cha-thrang (Very Expensive) The meat of a cha-thrang is very expensive and only eaten on rare occasions by nobles when it is available. (City-State of Tyr) The meat must be specially prepared to ensure a toxic lime from the creature’s shell is removed before cooking. (City-State of Tyr) A single cloud ray could easily provide an entire settlement with enough meat for 2 to 3 months. (Monstrous Compendium I: Terrors of the Desert) Crodlu One dish involves ground crodlu meat mixed with rice. (Dungeon 56 “Grave Circumstances”) Drake The meat of lesser drakes has an unpleasant taste. (Monstrous Compendium II: Terrors Beyond Tyr) Dune Trapper The flesh of a dune trapper can be eaten to survive, but none of the races hunt the dune trapper for its poor tasting flesh. Each dune trapper has a number of quarts of water equal to its hit points. (Monstrous Compendium I: Terrors of the Desert) Eelar Royal eelar honey is sickeningly sweet purple fluid that is similar to kank nectar. Consuming one pint of the jelly will fulfill all nutritional needs of a character for the day. The sweet smell of the jelly attracts ants, both regular and giant. (The Black Spine) Eelar may not be native to Athas, and may have traveled there with the githyanki. Erdlu (Cheap) Erdlu meat can be prepared in bits on a skewer and grilled over an open flame. Slabs of the meat are also smoked to prepare for journeys across the desert. (City-State of Tyr) In Draj a popular dish is erdlu stew and steamed corn. In Draj, a dried, pemmican-like erdlu meat is part of the local diet. Spiced erdlu meat with vegetables is a common Draji dish. (City-State of Draj) Erdlu eggs (Cheap) Erdlu eggs have a wrinkled, leathery shell, but are delicious and also nutritious. When eaten raw, the red yolks have a zesty, gamey taste that is both satisfying and invigorating. The whites form a spongy cake that tastes like cheese when cooked. (City-State of Tyr) If eaten raw, the egg can take the place of a day’s water requirements, but only for up to a week’s time. (The Wanderer’s Journal) The eat is an excellent source of nutrition, and can keep a man alive for months at a time for the eggs are packed with a variety of nutrients and essential vitamins. If eaten raw an egg can replace one gallon of water. However, it is not a perfect substitution and a man can only live on this egg water diet for one week, before he needs water. (The Wanderer’s Chronicle) Erdlund The large erdlund provides up to 700 pounds of meat each. Erdlund eggs are less tasty than erdlu eggs, but can provide food for three man. The eggs are 3’ in diameter. (Monstrous Compendium I: Terrors of the Desert) Fish There are occasionally mentions of fish. Most are underground water sources, such as the dray in New Giustenal. However many elven tribes know how to prepare fordorran meat in a way that prevents the meat from developing a bad taste. (Monstrous Compendium II: Terrors Beyond Tyr) Goat Goats roam the Ringing Mountains. (Wanderer’s Journal) Gorak Goraks are herd animals that are an integral part of the food chain for most meat eaters. Gorak eggs are delicious and often sought after. Slabs of jankz meat are also smoked to prepare for journeys across the desert. (City-State of Tyr) The meat has a gamey taste but is palatable. Because of the poison sacs, caution must be taken when preparing jankz. As a general rule, one jankz provides a meal for one man. (Monstrous Compendium I: Terrors of the Desert) Jankz meat is served in strips that have been dried in the sun and preserved with salt. (Complete Book of Gladiators) Kank (Cheap) Kank nectar/ honey is very nutritious. (City-State of Tyr) Kank honey is thick green and provides the eater with plenty of energy. (The Wanderer’s Journal) Kank meat cannot be eaten because when a kank dies its flesh emits an odor so foul that not even a starving man can stomach it. Food-producer kanks create a melon-sized, green honey globule that is very sweet. It can sustain a man for several days with no other means of nourishment. It is not known for its nutritional value, but does keep the slaves alive. (Black Spine) Nox Nox are subterranean six-legged lizards. They typically grow up to 3 feet long and are considered harmless. For creatures dwelling underground, nox can be a primary source of meat. (Black Spine) Pig There are pigs in the Forest Ridge. (Dragon Crown). It could be that pig refers to an aprig on Athas. Pterrax The eggs of pterrax are a very valuable source of food. One pterrax egg provides up to two meals. (Monstrous Compendium I: Terrors of the Desert) Pulp bee Worker pulp bees produce a sweet tasting liquid that is very nutritious. One quart of the liquid can provide the nutrients for 2 days. (Complete Book of Gladiators) When consumed raw each renk provides the equivalent of a ½ cup of water. An active man would need to eat 32 renks a day to replace his water requirement for the day. (Monstrous Compendium I: Terrors of the Desert) Scrab A single elf can survive on the meat of a scrab for days. Elves of the wastes eat scrab meat. They are tasty and considered a delicacy by giants. (City by the Silt Sea) Silt Serpent The giants and others who live along the shores of the Sea of Silt know that silt serpents make excellent meals. Their meat is sweet, tasty and extremely juicy, and it can be eaten raw or cooked over a slow-burning fire. The Sky Singers elf tribe makes a particularly famous dish using silt serpent meat and faro leaves. The meal, called alrasb in elven, can be sampled in Nibenay’s Hill District or the food tents of the Sky Singers road bazaars. #3Band2Feb 07, 2006 11:50:09 | I forgot to mention, that this listing is specific to the Tyr Region, so I did not include an life-shape food from the rhul-thuan halflings or the fish heavy diet of the Last Seagians. |
#4jon_oracle_of_athasFeb 07, 2006 12:40:52 | Nice! Mind if I put this on my site and credit you as compiler? |
#5ruhl-than_sageFeb 07, 2006 13:22:05 | Great List :D , I look forward to seeing the rest of the lists. On a side note you forgot to list Elf ;) . I think that its fair game, as it is specifically mentioned several times as being one of the Thri-kreens favorite foods. It's so good that its addictive :D . Halflings eat it too Mmmmm... eeelllff. |
#6xanthusFeb 07, 2006 16:31:41 | Mmm... Elf... the Other Other white meat. In a LARP I used to play in, me and my friends started a joke Knighthood called the "Knights of the Barbequed Elf" and we'd terrorize the people who played elves in our game. Fun times. -X |
#7Band2Feb 07, 2006 17:22:36 | Nice! Mind if I put this on my site and credit you as compiler? Hey wait until I finish. You may not like it once you have seen the whole thing. Part of the reason I put the source that each item was from was so that if anyone did not want to consider a certain accessory as canon they could ignore it. I know there is one coming that I would ignore on the beverage list, but I will include it anyway for completeness. Any way, I do not mind if you or anyone wants to put the list on their website. After all I did not write any of it, so I certainly do not feel I need any credit for compiling the list. Just hope everyone finds it useful. Actually, I guess that is not true. I did write one of the items, but I am given credit for that where I originally wrote it. |
#8jon_oracle_of_athasFeb 08, 2006 1:09:28 | Cool. Let me know when it's done. |
#9methvezemFeb 08, 2006 8:54:48 | Nice list Band2 Keep up the good work! Could you list the DS accessories that you have so we (I) know which one are done, even if they don't list any food. |
#10zombiegleemaxFeb 08, 2006 9:41:03 | Thanks for the fantastic list! I actually thought that you forgot about us and I imagined that the list would never get posted. I'm sorry for doubting you! I'll be interested in seeing your beverage list as well. Just one complaint: Did any of you ever get the feeling that a lot of the Dark Sun writers / designers were never really that familar with the setting to begin with? I often stumble across contradictions / inconsistencies when I am reading the material. For example, "faro leaves????" Didn't we already establish that faro was a cactus and it's needles are ground into a powder, used for gruel? I think that this list goes along really well with Kamelion's previous list of plants. itf |

#12Band2Feb 08, 2006 10:40:18 | Just one complaint: Did any of you ever get the feeling that a lot of the Dark Sun writers / designers were never really that familar with the setting to begin with? I often stumble across contradictions / inconsistencies when I am reading the material. For example, "faro leaves????" Didn't we already establish that faro was a cactus and it's needles are ground into a powder, used for gruel? Yeah, I have seen that a lot when making this list. There is another one coming that makes even less sense. Erdlu milk? Well I suppose it is possible for a cactus to have both leaves and needles. Maybe not probable, but still possible. Some cacti have long leaves with needles on the end. Or the "leaves" could be from the flowers on the faro, and are really petals. But seeing as the faro only products a fruit once per decade, I doubt it would product a flower much more often. In which case the “leaves” would be very expensive too. Just trying to come up with some explaination for faro leaves. Try www.DesertUSA.com/flora.html. It gives descriptions of many desert plants of the Southwestern US. |

#23Band2Feb 09, 2006 14:34:40 | Beverages I was going to post and say that that was the last of the 4 sections of my list. But I noticed that the Sky Singer wine does not have where I found it listed. I'll will have to go back and check my notes for that. Also, I want to compare my notes to the list to make sure there is nothing else missing. Before anyone posts the list somewhere give me a day or two to double check, and I'll post anything else that is missing. |

#28methvezemFeb 13, 2006 18:00:51 | Here are some additions (I provide you with the page in case you want to rewrite the entry your own style ;)). I cannot vouch that there isn't more in Cinnabar Shadows as I only wrote down those that were out of the ordinary.: Meat Fish There are occasionally mentions of fish. Some are found above ground. (Cinnabar Shadows 46) Fruits and Vegetables Berry - Bellberries (Cinnabar Shadows 12) Cabra (Cheap) Cabra melons are husky, dun-colored spheres. The inside is bright red and cool. #29Band2Feb 15, 2006 12:22:34 | Here are some additions Good catch on the whisky. I missed that. But for the beer, I would not call it beer. The statement in Elves of Athas is more general, refering to alcoholic brews, which I would take to mean a variety of alcoholic beverages, not just beer. |

#31Band2Aug 17, 2006 9:56:51 | Its the return of the Food of the Tyr Region! :D I started going through the novels to add to the list of food and drink available in the Tablelands. I only intend to go through the Prism Pentad, since I have those. I had some of the chronicles of athas at one time, but can no longer find them. I have been through the first three novels so far and noticed something. With the novels it is a little more difficult to determine what is food and what is not, and more is left up to interpretation. New plants and animals may be mentioned but not whether or not they are edible. So I have made two lists. What I'll post below will be those items that are mentioned as being edible. Later I post the list of other plants and animals mentioned in those three novels. When I get a chance I'll will finish the last two novels of the Pentad, but am not too sure when I'll have the time for that. In the meantime, does anyone have the products listed above by squidfur, such as Valley of Dust and Fire, or the Dragon articles, and what to make the list more complete. We have Methvezem's notes from Cinnabar Shadows. Anyone else? |
#32Band2Aug 17, 2006 10:00:11 | Meat & Other Animal Products Goat (Verdant Passage 85, 148) (Amber Enchantress 106) Lizard – General Sadira eats a lizard to stay alive in the desert. (Amber Enchantress 282) Lizard – Sweet Meat Sweet lizard meats are sold in the arena in Tyr. (Crimson Legion) Locust Rikus eats locust in the desert to stay alive. (Crimson Legion 184 ) Red cactus Grubs Red cacti contain little warm bodies of grubs about the size of a thumb. The grubs have white scale covered bodies and brown heads. They are considered nice and juicy. The heads are squeezed off before sucking the insides out. The taste is a rich gamey flavor, but was a little too sweet for Rikus’s taste. The heads and empty grub skins are toss away. (Crimson Legion 227) I have named these red cactus grubs based on the description in the book. It is possible that these are not the same red cactus grubs mentioned in the Complete Book of Gladiators as there are some differences in their description. Namely, the Complete Book of Gladiators states that the grubs are eaten whole, while here the insides are sucked out. Rotgrubs Fried rotgrubs are served in Tyr. (Verdant Passage 83) Snake Rikus eats snakes in the desert to stay alive. (Crimson Legion 184 ) Fruits and Vegetables Cactus - General Some Cacti are gnarled and as tall as trees while others creeping over small circles like thorn-rugs in rocky ground. (Amber Enchantress 78) Cactus – Honey Boiled Cactus Honey boiled cactus is served in the elven market in Nibenay. (Amber Enchantress 155) Cactus – Red cactus Red cactus is a round cactus the size of a man’s head. It has red, finger length spines and a leathery skin. Inside eat red cactus are red cactus grubs. (Crimson Legion 227) See red cactus grubs, below. Faro Faro is a dwarf cactus tree, as tall as a man with a handful of scaly stems that rise to a tangle crown of needle-covered boughs. It is a cash crop in Tyr. Each piece of sweet fruit only once a decade was a delicacy worth more than the plant itself. (Verdant Passage 63) The needles are made into a gruel for slaves. (Verdant Passage90) Faro blossoms have a sweet scent and have huge red flowers on the rare occasion they bloom. (Verdant Passage 173) Faro is made into a bread. (Amber Enchantress 174) Mushrooms Mushrooms grow in the Forest Ridge. (Verdant Passage 255) May not be edible. Silverbush Spicy silverbush is served in Tyr. (Verdant Passage 83) Silver bush is a species of plant that stores water like a cactus, some are toxic- with a milky sap. Thornberries Thornberries are sold in the arena in Tyr. (Crimson Legion) Tubers While in the desert, they mashed tubers into a gruel to drink the few bitter drops of juice. (Amber Enchantress 282) Potatoes and other similar vegetables are tubers. Beverages Broy Broy is fermented kank nectar. (Verdant Passage 83) It is potent and foul tasting. (Amber Enchantress 52) Milk - Goat Fermented goat’s milk is served in bars in Tyr. (Verdant Passage 85) Port Good port is served in Tyr. (Amber Enchantress 39) Wine – Asticles wine Asticles wine has a pale golden color and a tart, dry scent. It has a thin light taste that leaves the mouth dry. (Verdant Passage 223) The last seems to imply only that it is a dry wine. Wine – Brown Ktandeo drinks a mug of thick brown wine and calls it, “Good stuff.” (Verdant Passage 88) Wine - Fruit syrup The wine given to slaves is mostly fruit syrup. (Verdant Passage 223) This is based on a comment by Rikus comparing Asticles wine to the fruit syrup he has had in the slave pens. I have interpreted this to be a very weak wine, but it could also have been simply fruit juice. Wine - Milkwine Milkwine is a gummy liquid. (Verdant Passage 110) Could be fermented goat’s milk. Wine – Red Thick red wine is served in Tyr. (Verdant Passage 200) Wine - Sapwine Sapwine is tart smelling. It is fermented tree resin that has a powerful kick. It is the foulest drink available in the wine shops of Tyr. (Verdant Passage 85) |
#33Band2Aug 17, 2006 15:24:41 | Here are the animals mentioned in the novels that I am not sure qualify as food. Animals Bat Bats roast in the Shom emporium in Nibenay. However, druids know that the fruit varl’s stomach fluids eat away the black coating on the outside of the faro seeds allowing the seed to sprout twice as often as normal seeds. (Verdant Passage 67) Rikus calls a halfling a little varl as an insult. (Verdant Passage 268) Varls have egg sacks. (Crimson Legion 264) Glowworms Glowworms are a magical component and illegal in Tyr. (Verdant Passage 103) Lizard – Flying Rikus saw flying lizards with leathery wings over an oasis. They digest their prey by gripping it with their powerful three clawed feet and spitting acid over it. This fluid reduced bone and flesh to a pulpy ooze that the bird sucks up thorough its mouth. (Verdant Passage 132) Reptile – Unknown Pinkish reptiles that created a soft whisper by rubbing their pliant scales against silk webs which they spin. They are the length of a finger with soft tubular bodies, arrow shaped heads, small squared ears, and compound eyes like an insect. They have tiny legs and feet in front but none on their hindquarters. The creatures drink blood, and live in dark places. They were used to torment Sadira in captivity. (Verdant Passage 45) Rock Leopard (Verdant Passage 265) Rock leopards have very sharp nails. (Verdant Passage 270) Rodent Rikus saw a rodent at an oasis. #44flindbarDec 19, 2006 2:38:57 | Great listing Band2! Meth, You can have the list I started. I'm going to remove it from my site / sig as yours / band2s are much better and more well researched. Feel free you use as you wish. :D f. |
#45methvezemDec 19, 2006 8:01:06 | Thanks Flindbar! I've already compared your list with mine, and I'm using the one by Band2 about plants, vegetables and fruits as a way to see if I took note of them all. I should produce a 1st draft of the flora project sometimes next year. :D |
#46Band2Dec 19, 2006 11:58:16 | This is a great set of lists, thanks very much for digging up and compiling all that information!:D You are welcome. That was the last of what I can contribute to the list of food. The other DS products I do not have, so I don't intent to add to the list any more. If anyone else has Valley of Dust and Fire or some of the Dragon articles please go ahead and add to the list of food. For Methvezem I am not sure about your project, and wanted to clarify something. The list I made was specific to the Tyr region only. So plants mentioned as being in the Draxa in The Cerulean Storm or part of the Last Sea, I did not include on my list. If you are looking to include plants anywhere on Athas, you may need to recheck some of the products I covered. OK? I don't want to cause any confusion. |
#47Band2Dec 10, 2007 12:29:21 | I little update to the food list from the last two Athas.org releases. Also, I bought a pdf copy of Valley of Dust and Fire. No new food to add from reading it, but it can be added to the product list as being included in this listing. Meat and Other Animal Products Harnaq - Cheese Cheese made from harnaq milk is expensive. (Faces of the Forgotten North) Harnaq – egg (Faces of the Forgotten North) Harnaq The bones of the harnaq are thick, soft and full of marrow. (Faces of the Forgotten North) Vel Fruit (The Life-Shaping Handbook) Beverages Milk – Harnaq Harnaq milk is a drink of the rich. It provides a powerful resistance to diseases particularly those afflicting pregnant women. Harnaq milk costs 2 bits for a pint of milk. (Faces of the Forgotten North) |
