#1 megatherion Feb 07, 2006 14:02:06	Hello all. I have taken the liberty of setting up an IRC server, in hope to further strenghten the DS online community. Location is: irc.shatteredworld.org:6667 #darksun If enough of you start using it, we can hope to make it permanent, or perhaps persuade athas.org to open up and hold a live chat system, if the need exists of course. Needless to say to any of you who are well versed in IRC communities that such things bring people together faster than any mailing list or forum, but does not replace any of those two. Lack of permanency keeps the forums always in bussiness, while people, when at job or in school or anywhere online have a habit of idling in a comfortable chat and helping newcommers by answering questions. SO! Grab yer favourite irc client, be it mirc or X-chat aqua, and see you there!

#4 megatherion Feb 07, 2006 14:30:53	My mistake, irc.shatteredworld.org defaults to something completely different since it's an IRC site, not a HTML one. Do the following: 1. downloand and install an IRC client. If using Windows i suggest mIrc drom www.mirc.com. It's shareware, but you can try to find some other free client later via google. 2. Set it up. You want it to connect to the server "irc.shatteredworld.org". Edit your information, like your username (that is all very similar as on this forum - if your username is AAA then you will be AAA in the chat) 3. Once connected to the server, you want to join an IRC channel, called #darksun. you can either do it via typing in "/join #darksun" into the prompt, or you can set your preferances to automatically log you into that channel on this server once you run mirc. I personally cannot guide you through this since i use X-chat aqua, which is a free client made for the Mac OS X system. it's much easier. I will try to find a computer now and install the mirc and type all step by step. so if you fail yourself (it's not that difficult, really) i will guide you.
#5 megatherion Feb 07, 2006 14:49:24	Here, a 30 seccond setup: 1. go to www.mirc.com 2. download mirc IRC client program 3. install it. launch mirc. 3.a. ignore popup window, click something to get rid of it. 4. enter full name, email address and nickname. nickname is your username that will appear in the chat. alternitive nickname will be your username in case your original username is alrteady reserved/taken. 5. click servers subbar and then "Add" 6. description is whatever you want. irc server: "irc.shatteredworld.org" 7. click ok. land ok. 8. press the lightning icon to cnnect. 9. enter "/join #darksun" into the prompt.
#6 Pennarin Feb 07, 2006 14:50:14	My connection is failing at the "Log In" step. irc.shatteredworld.org is the default server I chose, and its clearly the one my irc prog is trying to connect to, but it keep saying the server is rejecting me. And mIRC is a paying prog btw. To those who don't want to have to start all over again in 30 days, I perused indexes of free IRC progs and found a nice-looking one (with a crispy-clear tutorial I might add) called leafChat.
#7 megatherion Feb 07, 2006 14:57:50	I will ask for some leniency as this is a brand new instalation of the irc server and i haven't cutomised it yet. it worked with mirc and x-chat aqua, but now i'll download and test it woth your program. perhaps i see why it's failing. a few minutes please.
#8 megatherion Feb 07, 2006 15:03:05	got it. leafchat uses an uncommon port to connect to servers. usual port is 6667, it uses 7000. Where you typed in irc.shatteredworld.org, type this: "irc.shatteredworld.org:6667" then in the "command" field type "/join #darksun" and there you are.

#14 Pennarin Feb 09, 2006 16:23:43	I'm there too, and its fun :D Me, Pringles, and Therion (megatherion) decided to leave our irc progs opened to show people that the channel is indeed in use by people. My name is currently Pennarin|away, and when I'll come back i'll type in the /command section the following line : /nick Pennarin My name is gonna come back to Pennarin, showing everyone that I'm back. The /command section is always present on the same window you are chating in, so its real easy to use.
