Hello all!

You may have noticed in the few past days some minor chat about the Shattered World, but I didn't want to go ringing any bells until it was up and running. Since now it is, it's time for a formal introduction.

Shattered World, is the newest Dark Sun site, one a bit different that the others. It's a repository, a library of sorts, a collection of all material we have on Dark Sun, be it prestige classes, lists of feats, pictures, maps or fluff. Anything at all, as long as it's DS related.

Currently it contains all the items listed in this board's Archive thread, minus the ones unconvertible like the long threads. Pennarin was so generous and allowed me to use his Archive as a kick-off board, which I did. Thanx again Penn! Among other things, it mirrors Brian's Maps and some other things, better go and see for yourself.

Anyway, I'm currently in the process (a long and lasting one) of harvesting quality information from other DS sites, and mirroring them. The entire idea of the repository is based on mirroring - the original content is mirrored and the links are made to point to where the original content came from. This is done because Shattered World has no bandwidth limitations whatsoever, and together with a 100Mbps link to the net it's more than capable of handling whatever you throw at it. Most other sites are not.

One other very important point is the life-span of other sites. For example, when I first started reading about DS sites, everyone pointed to Ur-Braxa as an excellent source for maps and whatnot. When I arrived there, it was down and it remained down ever since. Similar is the fate of other sites, and I decided that by mirroring content those sites would never truly die. As for the Shattered World life-span, hah, don't expect it to go down in this decade. Even in a case of fire or whatnot the databases are backed on an alternate server and it would come back online eventually.

Now. What I need from you good people. I need contributions. Anything you got. Be it (completed) prestige classes, fan stories, lists of DS feats, pictures drawn but never scanned that collect dust in your drawers, anything. Anything at all. All you have to do is to send it over via email, and I'll put it up. It's a repository after all, and everything goes, as long as it's decent.
Please. I really mean this. I need you for Shattered World additions!

One other quite important thingy. There's this IRC chat that's open and mostly empty. If you wish to chat to other DS fans, or perhaps even role-play in there, it's much faster and better than any other messenger. So. All you have to do is to read the IRC chat instructions over at the site, find yourself a DM and two other players, put a notice "Don't Disturb" and role-play all you wish! Instantaneous, better than RPOE or anything like that.

When at work or school, in front of the computer for long periods of time, get to the chat. It won't cost you anything and even if it's completely empty after some time someone other will come for sure. I usually hang in there whenever I am online, so if you would do the same we'd have many more nice conversations. Please, don't let this wonderful opportunity go waste.

Well, thank you all for your attention, and hopefully I'll see little boxes in my mailbox soon? Yes? :D

P.S.
If it's not too much trouble, check if your work (if it's already uploaded) is the latest version. I copied from the archive but might have made some errors.

Glad you liked it! :D In that case, see you on the chat! Right?
Right? The chat has been empty for days now... *sigh* I hope people would start hooking up soon. As I said, it's a role-play opportunity to have fun with people no matter where they are. Fun fun fun!

It is well done! Give me a moment and you will be added to the HUGIEST darksun links list of all time! :D

Btw, be sure to ask the authors before adding something to your site.

There seems to be a lot of material here from various authors. You will have to ask each author to get permission to post material. You probably know that.

I would hope so. Not to dash Megath's hopes for that site aside...

I was wondering about that- I kind of felt hijacked because no one asked me!

Not that I do not like the general idea, but I though that the Archive here on this board, and Pennarin maintaining it, was doing a great job.

Yep, sure. But there's the issue of contacting authors that lack email addresses. This is my standoff - If it's "minor" like a feat or a prestige class, it's for the taking by anyone who wishes to use it at home. By posting it on the site, naming the author, and naming where it's copied from I don't see any violation.

However, concerning major work like art pieces, maps, pdf articles etc, I will sure post only the content with the permission.

Dear people, I'm asking the permission to mirror your cumulative work, that originated on this board. For the content originated on other sites I will email those authors individually. If you have a problem with it please say so and your work will be removed without a question. However please keep in mind that the content on Shattered World is yours and yours alone, I have never claimed to have created it nor I will, you are fully credited by email and name, and that by having one well organised and indexed source the entire Dark Sun community prospers.

I hope there will be no misunderstandings, and Kal, if you really feel hijacked then say so and I will delete all content with your name on it.

I'm cool with you using any of my personal stuff on your site. Doomspike in particular enjoys the added exposure. He would give a sinister smile, too, except he doesn't have a mouth, so is reduced to waggling his feeding spine suggestively.

I noticed that you mentioned on your site:
In the meantime I'm waiting for Dark Sun info to give me permission to mirror their maps...

If you mean Dark Sun Rising (http://darksunrising.info/) then I doubt that such permission will be forthcoming. David Tisch, the webmaster and cartographer at that site tragically passed away in a car accident. His brother came on the boards a short while thereafter to pass on the news in this thread. He also mentioned that people wishing to host the maps should email him at a different address to the one listed on the Dark Sun Rising site. Follow the link for his contact details.

Lol ruhl, that question was a rethoric one, only to be answered if you deny the permission. ;)

Good people of Athas, Norwegia, and Quebec, hear me!

Nha, too dramatic. Ok guys, its rather simple: a good half of megatherion's site is - literally - a mirror of the Dark Sun Archive, and as such I don't forsee problems in porting that content unto his site, credits given. (The rest of his site is a repository of content from individual sites, and that is more tricky. But its also not important in this discussion.)

So I ask from everyone to consider these few words: Why not?

Everyone is free to do as they please, even to request information be removed from the Dark Sun Archive here on the boards. I support megatherion's attempt at centralizing everything because with it we can potentially ensure we have the equivalent of a disc backup of all DS info everywhere, so dissapearing sites, dissapearing people, dying people , cannot cause the information to dissapear forever.

Fine be that way, permission denighed :headexplo :hoppingma

Nah, I like the site. GO ahead, display my creations as if they were cool or something! :D

Did you know that nearly half of our functioning DNA sequences are now owned by private companies under patents and intellectual property laws? Soon we will have to pay royalties to companies for benefiting from the genes we were born with in our bodies, but that they own the rights to.

Sorry, I don't know what that has to do with this, but it really tees me off! People are too concerned with property and ownership.

I just like to have a bit of foreplay first :D

I was not trying to sound like a jerk- If I really had a problem with it I would have said something when I was checking out the site and noticed that the version of Galdra was an old one- but I insist on being called Kalthandrix the Dread, Flayer of Halflings :evillaugh

I'd be insulted if you didn't :P

Please take this as a constructive comment. I see a potential problem with data redundancy -i.e. Mega will have to do a lot of updates to his site if people edit their prestige classes, items and such - which online publications subject to discussion and continous improvement tend to do. So, it might be a good idea to "freeze" material before it is posted on Mega's site.

Hmmm... this is indeed a good question. Well, we could do it like this. If there's an update, edit your post and after you update the class just post a reply to it saying "last update date-month-year". I could rename the date index on the site to point to THAT date instead of the date the prc is added up, and voila, if there's a mismatch, the site should be updated..

Of course, by far the most easier solution would be that when a person updates a class he posts a simple reply to the archive thread. i read that one and would immediately seek the newest version and update it.

Freeze solution also is not a bad idea, but i wouldn't practice it. freeze has some meaning beffore a prc is added into the official material, so thta if there's no update in months there probably won't be, but here it's not a problem as long as you inform me it's updated one way or the other. email, thread replies, private messsages, chat, everything goes.

Lol Galek, I'm not a guru to ask me for advice... just make some decent graphics, patch them up with xhtml and css and cross your fingers the people will like it... As for the content - I suggest the content defines the visual style of the page. If it's ruins then put some ancient ruins in the background (stylised not real photo) or perhaps images of bazaar for the food pages, dunno, that's what I'd do. I wish you good luck and will help if you get stuck! ;)
