#1korvarFeb 21, 2006 18:42:23 | Went to the British Museum, and wandered their "Ancient Near East" galleries. Urik seems to be Babylonian/Assyrian/etc. inspired, so I thought that would be a good place to get some inspiration. Took some photos, using my digital camera, my phone camera, and my stone-age steam-powered film camera. The first set of photos is here, from my phone camera. The photos from my film camera are now here. Unfortunately, a) the flash on the camera washed out some details and b) the photo lab's photo-to-CD setup is a bit below par. When I'm back at my main machine (in a few weeks!), I'll scan the photos directly and improve them. I might be able to do a bit with the rather simple editor that comes on the CD. We'll see. I also took some photos in the African galleries, which could be used as Gulg reference, and I've put them here. I sketched a couple of cool-looking weapons when my film ran out; they will need to be scanned, however. Digital Camera Pics now up. The pics are from all over the Mesopotamian, both in geography and time, but the Athasian cities all seem to be a bit of a mish-mash of their respective cultures, so I don't see that as a problem. You could also go to the British Museum's Ancient Near East page or the British Museum Ancient Near East Galleries for more information. |

The famous expression of Hamanu seems (to me) to be inspired by the Persian King Dareios. But I'm not entirely sure about this. The Name of the city is more Summerian. Probably the creators of DARK SUN were a bit eclectic when they designed the setting. Many of the seven city states seem to be based on the model of several ancient cultures. But maybe this is another thread. |

To me, The Code of Hamannu looks to be based on The Code of Hammurapi, the Ancient Babylonian king, and I'm fairly sure the description of the hairstyles (at least) of Urik match the Babylonians. However, I'm not familiar enough with the Persians to claim they weren't the inspiration for Urik... Alas, I'm far away from my books, so I can't go through my Veilled Alliance to see what it says about the dress and architecture of Urik... |
#4kalthandrixFeb 22, 2006 7:02:34 | I have always been of the mind set that Nibenay was more of the Persian then Urik- and from what I have read, Babylonian culture seems to mirror Urik more. Just throwing in my loose change. |
#5korvarFeb 22, 2006 12:00:58 | Added pics from my film camera - edited the original post to add the links. More "Urik" ones, and some "Gulg" (i.e. African) ones |
#6real_systemFeb 22, 2006 16:55:54 | To me, The Code of Hamannu looks to be based on The Code of Hammurapi, I wasn't talking about the the code of Hamanu (this is a fan project, isn't it?) but about the first entry about Urik in the Wanderer's Journal. And what Hamanu says there sounds for my ears a bit Persian. Also the Architecture of Urik presented in the WJ doesn't look like Babylon. |
#7zombiegleemaxFeb 22, 2006 18:00:32 | Great pics Korvar! Man I love museums. I always wanted to hide out in one until it closed and then walk around after hours. Looks like you're having fun over there. Have you participated in any pub quizzes yet? |
#8valeshdemonMar 10, 2006 0:16:18 | I always figured Urik was more like the civilazations of the Atecs, Inca, or Mayans. The construction and design, as well as the emphasis on the Jaguar, and the Eagle. I could be wrong, however. |
#9valeshdemonMar 10, 2006 1:37:58 | er... scratch that, I was thinking of Draj, my bad :D |
#10ZardnaarMar 10, 2006 3:07:51 | Urik is Babylonian influenced although the miltancy also suggest an Assyrian influence on the game designers. Man I'm a geek its friday night here |
#11korvarMar 11, 2006 9:41:58 | Last set of pics, from my digital camera, are now up, and I have edited the top post accordingly. |
