Okay I was tring to ask about how everyone would have a stage 1-4 Athasian Dragon would redeem themself's to get ready to become an avangion for DS 3.5. The Athasian Dragon document from Athas.org gives the first step in red and underlined and I quote:
Ex-Athasian Dragons
An athasian dragon who becomes a preserver cannot progress in levels as an athasian dragon, though he retains all his athasian dragon abilities. However any use of the all-out attack, dragon magic, or energy storing abilities will instantly return an athasian dragon to being a defiler. An athasian dragon that has progressed to the 5th stage or later of the metamorphosis, by casting the defiler metamorphosis V spell, may no longer become a preserver. Note becoming an ex-athasian dragon is the first step towards redemption and becoming an avangion.

I'm a bit confused as well. I just don't even know what is being asked here.

I'm guessing he's asking how you convert a 2e dragon character to 3.5e...

If so:
Go to athas.org, download all the rules conversions there, including the dragon prestige class.
Then, take your 2nd-ed character's wizard levels, and leave them what they are. Take 1/3rd of your psionicist levels, and that's your overall psion level (see the link about advance beings in Xlorep's signature for the reason behind this). If this doesn't make you at least a 17th level wizard and 11th level psion, which it probably won't since a 2e dragon was a 20/20 wiz/psi (so in 3.5e you'd be 20th Wiz / 6 Psion), you'll need to fudge around with your total # of character levels to get the right balance - change out some wizard levels for Cerebromancer levels until you can manifest at least 6th level powers and 9th level, probably doing something like 15 Wizard / 12 Psion / 5 Cerebromancer since that gives you a good blend of caster and manifester levels well beyond what is required.
Then, using the athas.org dragon PrC, make sure your 3.5e character meets the requirements, and add the appropriate number of dragon levels.

And if that isn't the answer to what you were trying to ask, well...

It would seem you and me both! I have edited the first post, please reread. For my defence I am on some new medication for my leg, got hit by a powerlift at work, not good!

Sounds like good stuff, rjtrotter :P

For the dragon question, I think the answer is already in the quoted text:
An athasian dragon who becomes a preserver cannot progress in levels as an athasian dragon, though he retains all his athasian dragon abilities. However any use of the all-out attack, dragon magic, or energy storing abilities will instantly return an athasian dragon to being a defiler.

To become a preserver you need to have conversion cast upon you by a druid, at the price of 1,000 XP per caster level you have.
Then, you need to remove the Athasian Dragon abilities, and any abilities steming from the Arch Defiler class (or any other PrC that has "Must be a defiler" as a prerequisite). To do so you need to subject yourself to level drains, and willingly fail your saves afterwards, ensuring permanent level loss. (Only a DM can decide if the player is allowed to choose which of his character's classes lose levels.)
Then you might need to remove the changes brought upon by the defiler metamorphosis spells, but reading of the spells' effects indicate they are not tied to defiling and being a defiler, so it may not be necessary. If the spells' changes are not removed, then wherever the avangion spells will have an effect that overlaps or contradicts an effect brought on by being a dragon, then the original dragon characteristic is replaced by the new avangion one. (For example, a dragon's DR is replaced by an avangion's DR.)
If you indeed need to remove all traces of the dragon within you, including those changes brought on by the defiler metamorphosis spells, then you need to create one or more epic spells whose purpose are to remove said changes.
