Questions about TSR authors

I'm working on the author list for the Mystara Database Project, and I need some clarifications. I have tried searching for the information online, to no avail.

This leaves me to rely on word of mouth. If you can answer any of the questions in this thread, I will be very thankful. If you heard something or assumed something but aren't sure, I'd like to hear that too.

I'm going to make a list of questions in this post, and update it as necessary.

  • Are Anne C. Gray and Anne Gray McCready one and the same person? Anne C. Gray is listed as editor on many products up to about 1985 or 1986. Thereafter she disappears, replaced by Anne Gray McCready - her married name?
  • A similar situation occurs with Karen S. Martin, who becomes Karen S. Boomgarden. Can anyone confirm they are the same person?
  • And again with typographer Kim N. Janke, who appears in early products but is quickly replaced by a Kim N. Lindau.
  • For Anne Gray McCready, is her last name "Gray McCready", or "McCready"? As far as I know it could go either way, but some of you might have more experience with double barrelled names than me. ;) (AC9 suggests that it's "McCready".)

Additionally, if anyone has any information, photos, etc., of the authors of old OD&D and Mystara products, I would also like to hear from you.

You might have better luck on ENWorld or Dragonsfoot.org. The Pen & Paper RPG Database might help. For example, it says that Karen S. Boomgarden is indeed Karen S. Martin.

Karen S. Boomgarden: http://www.pen-paper.net/rpgdb.php?op=showcreator&creatorid=481

"Anne Gray McCready" should be written as "McCready, Anne Gray." Her database entry is here: http://www.pen-paper.net/rpgdb.php?op=showcreator&creatorid=937

Anne Gray: http://www.pen-paper.net/rpgdb.php?op=showcreator&creatorid=1352

And here's Kim Janke: http://www.pen-paper.net/rpgdb.php?op=showcreator&creatorid=1346

I guess I should branch out a bit more... I have only been to Dragonsfoot to see Frank Mentzer's thread, and never to ENWorld yet.

As for the Pen & Paper RPG Database, I'm not terribly impressed with it as far as OD&D stuff goes, I'm afraid. It's woefully incomplete. Just in my own investigations of the credits in the original sources I have already far surpassed that site in accuracy and content.

But you're right that it can be useful on occasion, and I have been checking up some names on it too. ;)

Notice how both Anne and Kim strangely disappear at a certain point in time, only to be replaced by someone with the same name and initials but a different surname?

I'd still like to get confirmation, but short of a direct reply from Bruce or another ex-TSR person that seems unlikely.

ReallY? :-)

Anne Gray McCready -- Gray is Anne's maiden name. Her last name is Gray McCready.

Lindau is Kim's maiden name.

Karen's name is Boomgarden, her maiden name, formerly Martin.

Piece of cake!

Cheers

Bruce, thank you very much for the confirmation. :D

These questions are for everyone - if you know the answer to any of them, please tell me. Of course, some of them can probably only be answered by Bruce, since they require information that I couldn't find anywhere in the original books or online.

  • Who did the cover for AC5 Player Character Record Sheets?
Answered by Ray below: it was Clyde Caldwell.
  • What is the correct spelling of artist Mario Macari's name? Is it Macari or Maccari? (He worked on David "Zeb" Cook's CM4 Earthshaker! and Bruce's CM7 The Tree of Life.)
  • Who did the cartography, and who designed the demographic tables on the Trail Maps?

Thanks! I actually discovered his page just last week, but I hadn't noticed that his signature mark is at the bottom of each page - and matches the one on AC5.

Good work! That's one less question to remain unanswered thanks to you.

I've seen it spelled Mario Macari more often than Maccari (I know he's credited as Mario Maccari on XS2: Thunderdelve Mountain).

I've also seen it credited Mario Macari, Jr. and Mario D. Macari.
