I'm considering starting some urban adventures in the City of Greyhawk, but I don't have any urban adventures on hand. I've run Mad God's Key from Dungeon Magazine already as my campaign starter, and after some additional adventures, the party has returned to the Free City of Greyhawk.

I was originally going to run the Istivin campaign arc from Dungeon Magazine, but I think it would be fun to allow the players to futher explore The Free City of Greyhawk. I have a laminated copy of the map from LGJ #2 as well as Greyhawk: The Adventure Begins, so resources are available. I just need some good urban adventures. Any ideas or suggestions?

There aren't many starting/low level city adventures available, especially ones which convert well to the Free City.

Hmm..

"Death in Freeport" (Green Ronin) would work, though GH isn't exactly known as a "pirate city" so you'll have to 'tone down' some aspects. It's available as pdf on various websites.

"Nightshade" (Dungeon, issue #7) would work too, though you'll have to convert it to 3.5 first (not hard, really)

"Message in a Bottle" (En Route II, p.73, from Atlas Games) is a nice, short, murder mystery which can be set in any inn.

"Foul Locales: Urban Blight" (by Mystic Eye Games) offers some fascinating places to drop in any city setting, many of which would work well in the Free City.

"The Temple of Mysteries" (by Malhavoc Press) could be inserted in the Free City's sewers as a testing ground left behind by Zagyg. It's more a dungeon than a city encounter but the plot is intriguing.

Thanks or the list; I'll try to check some of those out. If it helps, the party is actualy a 10th/11th-level party now.

You might want to check out Greyhawk the Adventure Begins which has a write up of the city circa CY591. There should be some stuff in there to get you going...

If you're thinking of running the Dungeon Sterich mods later maybe an NPC from the City of Greyhawk would need escort to Keoland/Sterich.

;)

I might take the opportunity to try running a more off-the-cuff style of game. G:TAB has enough content that I could jump start from there and run wild with it. Having an urban setting allows me to throw in random elements easily enough because of the high population density.

Doh! Forget my previous list then (apart from Urban Blight). I was under the impression your party was lvl 1-3, not 10-11.

Let me try again..

There were some amusing short adventures on cards in the City of Greyhawk boxed set but I'm guessing you don't have it.

- "Jingling Mordo Circus" (Dungeon #7)
- any of the Challenge of Champions adventure (Dungeon, various issues)
- "Of Nests and Nations (Dungeon #13): tough to adapt but one of my best memory of a high-level city's adventure. By the end, your PC won't know what to do or who to trust.

Note I edited some of the links and added two dungeon adventures!

Dungeon #7 The Jingling Mordo Circus (10+; V.Broquard; 15p) Carnival fun and deadly danger. Step right up, ladies and gentlemen.

Dungeon #13 Going once…Going Twice (any) An Arch-Mage is retiring and selling his possessions-and you’re at the auction!;**

Dungeon #13 Of Nests and Nations (BXD&D; 8-12) A city besieged from within. Watchmen are murdered, ships explode and sink in their berths, and savage monsters are summoned in the streets-but no one can catch the
killers.;**

Dungeon #19 House of Cards (9-12) The fate of a city lies within a dungeon whose doors are sealed with-cards. ** DECK OF MANY THINGS

Dungeon #42 Izek’s Slumber (sidetrek; 7-10 or wizard 12-14) Sometimes you should let sleeping wizards lie.

Dungeon #87 The Cradle of Madness Robert Lee D&D3e, levels 3-8 (6). Set in the Greyhawk City, the adventure makes good use of a Tharizdun cult.

Dungeon #91 The Rock and the Hard Place Brian Corello D&D3e, levels 10-20+ (16). Nomially set in Greyhawk City, the PCs bump into (literally) a waif with a new artifact in hand (The Eye of Night's Embrace), and must stop a deva and an ice devil from pulling her apart to get it.

(I think it is set in the City of Greyhawk)

Of course there's also The House on Summoner Court, by Roger E. Moore from Shadis #50 (Aug 1998)
AD&D 2nd Edition, levels not provided. I suggest levels 7+. This adventure first appeared in The Oerth Journal #7, which differs significantly from the Shadis version; characters subjected to Erac's Cousin's machinations should be higher level than the Shadis version, probably 10+. It is also available at the RPG Archive.

You might also want ot get the old City of Greyhawk Boxed Set (perhaps in pdf form) for it's indepth look at the city. True G:tAB updates some of that info but it is not nearly as detailed as CoG.

The Gem of the Flanaess articles in the Living Greyhawk Journals update the city to 3E by quarter : LGJ2: The Artisan Quarter, LGJ 4,5: Clerkburg. Maldin's GReyhawk site had a bit more material and the map of course.

If you want to convert more (perhaps lower level) 2E generic adventures from Dungeon use TSR's Dungeon index #1-71 and/or Jay Hafner's Complete Dungeon Index (1-81) to choose. [There's got to be a more detailed index to the 3E Dungeons somewhere...]

As usual with most of the links you need to rightclick and copy/paste the links into your browser manually or else WotC' cry baby page will scramble the link-details...

There were a bunch of short adventure cards in the City of Greyhawk boxed set, as well as the From the Ashes boxed set that could easily be converted, adapted and re-CRed. As could the extensive 3-part Falcon series WGA1-3.

If you haven't seen it already, there's also a map of the sewers beneath the CoG on my website.

Huzza Thanael! Good list.

I'd also recommend the World of Greyhawk hardback book from first edition if you can find it anywhere. I believe there were several short adventures for the city of Greyhawk in it to introduce characters to some of the major NPCs of the city.

And the Age of Worms Adventure Path in Dungeon magazine has two good adventures in the city... Hall of Harsh Reflections and ??? er. the one right after Hall of Harsh refections (I don't read Dungeon right now since I'm playing in the Adventure Path in a home game and we are just finishing the Hall).

There was also a Boxed set for the City of Lankhmar (from the Fritz Lieber/Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser books) that we used lots, although it was back in first edition also.

Steal ideas from Waterdeep shamelessly also, most should convert well.

Actually, at the beginning, it was a 1e softcover later updated to 2e which had a whole line of modules and some accessories (such as the excellent one about the Lankhmar's thieves' guild).

The boxed set came later (in 1996 IIRC) and was a standalone RPG with simplified AD&D rules.

Aaaah the memories...

Greyhawk Adventures is the Hardcover that Varthalon mentioned. It has a few NPC writeups too (incl. Nerof & Turin).

As for Lankhmar material I have only Thieves of Lankhmar but between this, Den of Thieves and the 2E Thieves handbook there should be much material for a CoG campaign if you want to involve the Thieves' Guild.

There are also a two old RPGA adventures by Erik Mona which I seem to recall take place near the Gem of the Flanaess: "River of Blood" and "As He Lay Dying"

And there'a also:

Polyhedron #58, p.12
"The Legacy" (Kevin Melka with Keith Polster)
Greyhawk module that starts in the City of Greyhawk and ends near the Hellfurnaces.

and

Polyhedron #92, p.12
"River Rats" (Keith Polster)
Greyhawk module involving the Rhennee and their hasty barge of Nyr Dyv, starting in the City of Greyhawk.

Sadly i havn't got either...

Green Ronin has a Thieves Quarter city book by JD Wiker that might come in handy too.

Thanks for all the input guys! I decided to go with the Istivin campaign arc in Dungeon. The best I could come up with for the Greyhawk adventures was nothing more than a string of short one night encounters (I have very little time to write up my own stuff). I figured the players would get more out of a mini-adventure path set in Istivin, especially one that ties into a lot of rich Greyhawk history.
