Pardon me if this has been discussed before, but someone once mentioned the idea of using the shugenja as a replacement for the Dark Sun cleric.

I'd be interested in hearing how well this works, and whether it fits the feel of Dark Sun better or not.

Thanks in advance.

... how well this works...

In general, it works well. Moreover, it works better than the same substitution in GH/FR/etc.

It fits well enough. At least, it fits my feel. Of course, they are called clerics, not shugenjas, and they use no ofudas, no matter what the .... it might mean.

I am more of a...purest in my game and have never felt the inclination to introduce shugenja, ninja, samurai, ect into my game.

But to each their own. I have always said that the major factor of any game is whether or not you and your players are having fun. Everything else is negotiable.

Dragonhelm is suggesting shugenja on a mechanical stand point, not on a flavor one ;)

Exactly. In fact, I was thinking the shugenja might actually enhance the flavor of the DS cleric (minus ofuda and wakizashi, of course ;) ).

Someone suggested it once, and that thought has always stuck with me. I could also see going with the mystic from the DLCS and choosing between an elemental domain. Still, I'm not quite sure that has the type of flavor a DS cleric has. *shrugs*

I think the mystic would make for a great templar personally.

Templars of http://athas.org rules already have very similiar mechanics with mystics from DCS.

Yes, I'm aware of those

As I stated in the templar thread, I think they would benefit from having domains vs. assigned spells. Bottle-necking every templar, regardless of who their SK is, into the same spells is pretty bland IMO.

IMHO, nobody is.
AD&D 2e rules held clerics (and druids) considerably weaker than wizards (and psionicists) of the same level. The 3(.5)e rules negated (or even reversed) this difference, and if we use the core classes in DS, we penalize wizards socially without any compensation, so the limitation of divine (also druidic as spirit shaman) spells known keeps not the flavour of DS divine caster, but that of DS wizard (even preserver). The same reason keeps me from allowing erudites.

One of the many differences that stand out between the Shugenja and the DS cleric would have to be hit dice and spell preperation. I don't think that these would effect the flavor much. (If you are like me and use spell points, then it won't make any real differance.) How would you consider your spells? Would you use the DS cleric spell list? Just some thoughts.

The most simple way is to use http://athas.org cleric spell list, using both spells with [element] descriptor and spells mentioned in CD, p. 144-148, as element spells, and http://athas.org cleric domains as shugenja orders.
