I always found the use of magic as described in the Chronicles very fascinating. Reading the Defenders of Magic trilogy I would like to ask, if anybody knew about rules and mechanics, to support such fluff elements as the memorization practices and similar, as described in these books?

According to the PHB, a Wizard does cast his spells, only later finishing it by casting the spell's trigger. Now if this was true for DL mages, why should they bother to memorize any complicated patterns?

I havenĀ“t read Defenders of Magic but the "trigger" is more or less complicated from spell to spell (this includes components: V, S, M), and knowing the gestures, words/entonation and material is needed to cast a spell.

3.x replaced the "memorizing" concept for "prepare"... is like beggining the spell and "finishing" it later, older editions actually used the concept that a spell is "forgotten" right after being cast (forgotten yet not unlearned, sounds weird but that's how it worked).

Also some DL writers mention that a wizard weakens after casting a spell, in addition novels rarely supports D&D rules, in fact for 3.x DL designers had to translate into game mechanics some "mistakes" in WoS trilogy.
