It's seems to be pretty close in power to the 4th level wizard spell Solid Fog. It only lasts for rounds/level rather then minutes, but it has a range of Medium as opposed to no range, which is a huge boost in power for a spell like this (almost warranting an increase in level all by itself, as evidenced by the difference between the spells Obscuring Mist and Fog Cloud). The debilitating effects of the two spell are approximately equal. Solid Fog's slow effect isn't as debilitating as the Volcanic Vent's nausia effect, nor does it persist after you have left the cloud, but Volcanic Vent does allow a saving throw unlike Solid Fog. The addition of damage from Volcanic Vent just pushes it a little beyond the power of Solid Fog, still within reason for a 4th level Wizard spell, but definately a little stronger. All that being said, Solid Fog is a wizard spell, so Volcanic Vent as a cleric spell would have to be a higher level. Also, because you are conjuring a real cloud of toxic vapors, spell resistance should not be allowed. |

Second, you don't need to include the second half of this sentence: "Living creatures within the vapors are nauseated (Fortitude negates), and are limited in action to taking a single move (or move-equivalent action) per turn." That's the definition of nauseated. |
#4radnoviusMay 27, 2006 16:19:59 | Actually I based the spell on stinking cloud. I reduced the size of the cloud (its now only 1/8 the size of the spell I based it upon) and added the heat damage. Spell resistance would likely apply to the heat/nausea but not the obscuring. I may reword it. I also might increase the size a little to 20 ft radius and 15 ft. high making it 1/3 the original volume. (For the math impaired 2/3 the original radius squared times 3/4 of the height = 1/3). |
