Hi, all! I'm getting ready to start work on a fansupplement that describes, for my own group's enjoyment, what lies in the distant north, east and south of Athas. So, to jumpstart my imagination, why don't you all inform me of what little is known, either from developer chats, official stuff from 2e game supplements, or else from the minds of the athas.org developers. What lies beyond Saragar? What lies on the opposite side of the Sea of Silt? Beyond the Deadlands, what is known?

--and so on NB

....please note: I AM NOT INTERESTED IN THE AREAS TO THE WEST OF THE JAGGED CLIFFS. The tohr-kreen empire bores me to tears, and as such I could care less about what lies to the west.

--so, please, stick to the far, far north, far, far east, and far, far south NB

Guys,

Does anyone have a link to the thread which had the maps that Brian did? I can't find them. I'm sure this would help NB tremendously.

Well, I like the maps, I'm not too fond of Brian's take on what's going on in the world, but those maps are awesome, I get ideas for what is in there just by looking at them.

I have some ideas about the far north of the continent. A city called Bastion, home of the Twilight Hall.

Perhaps another major center of civilization (perhaps roving bands of semi-settled tribes hiding out in ruined city-states?) might have divine-spellcasting advanced beings as the local rulers?

I've toyed with ideas of cultures/situations that are completely distinct and separate from what we know of Athasian life (city-states, etc.). Places where the world had become harsher and more dangerous, but where there are no sorcerer-kings, possibly no arcane magic at all. I'm not completely sold on the idea that the rebirth races extended very much outside of the known parts of Athas. And those that did, could have met some very strong resistance. Things like a continent populated by decendants of semi-sentient lifeshaped beings and the like are what I think of.

Well, you must realize, it's improbable in the extreme that all rhulisti went into barbarity. And not all slid into decadence like the rhul-thaun. So, yes, it's likely that vestiges of the Blue Age still exist in remote areas of the Athasian super-continent, eking out what life they can from the dried, nigh-dead earth.

But other than that, you're wrong, the Rebirth races had a crapton of space to move into. I think they kept on migrating until they ran into something that forced them back. And while, I like your idea of semi-sentient lifeshaped items inhabiting the far reaches of the world, I'm not so sure that would stop hordes of dedicated colonizers, especially humans and giants. But now the idea of sentient and highly psionic lifeshaped floating jellyfish won't leave me alone!

I don't think the colonization happened all that fast. I mean, first the various rebirth races had to come to grips with what they were, figure out civilization and all of that (Athas wasn't always a 'super-continent', at least it doesn't seem like it was for me). To the West, you have serious bug problems (anyone got a can of RAID?). To the East... ok, across the Sunrise Sea, I could see some of the Rebirth races migrating over there. to the North, I honestly think that Saragar & the Last Sea are pretty close to the Northern edge of the continent. To the South... there *was* civilizations down there, now there is the Deadlands. Below the Deadlands, if memory serves, is a wierd bug civilization that follows their own bugdead, I think it is hinted at in TotDL.

The eastern shores of the Silt Sea (then Sunrise Sea) could have had colonies that could have worked their way through the eastern part of the continent by now. I still think it would be a radically different set of cultures and social structures to what we see in the Tablelands (because Dark Sun seems to be punctuated with radically different cultural extremes anyway -- the Tablelands, the Last Sea, the Crimson Savannah, the Deadlands... these are really nothing alike).

Now, I think there were more continents on the world than just the one the Tablelands are on. On those far-off continents, there could be really, really radically different kinds of creatures, like the decendants of semi-sentient lifeshaped creatures (note, I said decendants of, not that the creatures are still lifeshaped creatures any more. Lifeshaping could have resulted in any number of kinds of creatures that had to "fend for themselves" over the years, and then developed into something a bit more intelligent and advanced). There could also be pockets of the Blue Age still being upheld by Rhulisti that have continued as best they could (I'm thinking more post-apocalyptic sci-fi like setting for those, personally).

While I don't have it all the way laid out yet:

Bastion is a city that dates back to the Green Age. It was a place of vast knowledge off psionics and had a university where people could come and learn. It was a city that was watched over by a pyreen and was the site of a Rhulisti city during the Blue Age. During the Time of Magic, perservers where welcomed there, and workers underneath the city descovered the ancient Rhulisti ruins and some of their work on life shaping. After much study and work, they were able to descover how to grow a material that had some unusual properties.

This was not a lifeshaped living creature, just a bi-product. It was actually a nature-bender experiment that, when the item crafted was subjected to energy from the Grey, would "die" and become as strong as iron and have similar properties to obsidian for psionic purposes only (not for magic). This allowed them to advance some of the Green Age technology and allowed them to make some interesting new items. It allowed the to create Guardians that had moveable forms (workers, walking transports, flying transports, ext.) and also allowed for new forms of armor and other items. This material, however, was very hard to make. They also were able to discover some other life shaped blue prints, and were able to have a small (very small) number of these things around.

When the Perserver Wars and the Cleansing Wars started, they isolated themselves even further from the tablelands and where mostly forgotten. It was towards the end of the Wars that they realized that Rajaat would not stop with the non-human races, and the pyreen that was protecting them came to the conclusion that something must be done. So at the Twilight of the world, they made the Twilight Hall, and the citizens of Bastion chose their finest warriors to become Twilight Soliders (see Kalthandrix's sig for more). Before they could be put into action the Champions rebelled and the wars ended. The Pyreen, in order to fuel the change and make the Twilight Hall work voluntarily became undead, and is now trapped there.

When Boyrs became the Dragon, he rampaged in the surrounding region and all but wiped out the population there which has slowly been rebuilt and now stands around 5000 people. The Pyreen worked on advancing the technology since and has sent spies into the tablelands to keep tabs on what is happening. The time seems right to reintroduce themselves.

I am trying to put together a small little supplement for it (20 to 30 pages) and hopefully will have it out by the end of the year. I am increadibly busy and have had to put my dream project Supplement: Cleansing Wars on indefinate hold. Anyway, that is a brief overview of Bastion.

bump... Am I to take it that no one is interested in a new location? Just wondering as it has been a few days. If there is no more interest I will let it fall into oblivion.

Drooling, I love most new information, especially about unexplored areas. Keep it comming!
I read the novels, and get a hold of as many D&D redbox, AD&D 2.5 resources as I can. But I have only played briefly, because I intend to use these as a resource for a computer game(not unlike diablo 2 but crossed with a single-world MMORPG[but with a faster pace]).

Excellent stuff. I'd like to see exampes of the creatures and constructs you mentioned.

Most of it is still just in my head, but I take it from the stand point of "What would happen if you advanced Green Age tech with some slight changes and isolation." I am currently out of the town, and will be for a few weeks, but I hope to have a lot of stuff done before grad school begins again in the fall. There is also the fact that there are some PrC's that I would like to borrow/steal/slightly modify that fit some ideas that I have; like a psionic silt skimer floater that powers a flying ship. Things like that are some of what I have in mind.

And just to let everyone know, the things I have in mind are NOT intended to be overly powerful or great in number. There may be a few items that are powerful, some concepts that are strange (but keeping in the feel of athas), but in the end I hope to open up a new little area (while not placing it exaclty, I have an idea for a space on brian's maps) to discover or a new group of people for others to interact with.

Did I blow the sites cap?
I NEED those map resources desperately. Dammit that site was one of the best I have seen.
Can't anyone keep a good darksun site together - now I know what to do with my will money - set up a trust fund to keep a Dark Sun site going FOREVER!!!!

just hazarding a guess here, but the site being taken down might have something to do with the site's creator having been killed in a car accident some months ago. his brother, IIRC, had been keeping it going, but may have taken it down or something, for whatever reason.
