#1rikutatisJul 31, 2006 7:49:16 | I recently purchased the Sword & Sorcery Ravenloft Core book in the used section of my local store. It was cheap and I used to enjoy playing Ravenloft back in the days of 2e with my group. But I never owned the books myself and I was never a DM for that setting. So I'm just wondering how the new version of the game compares with the old one in terms of atmosphere, setting, canonical references and all that. Just wondering how much changed in the transition from 2e to 3e. Is it a good start to a new DM already familiar with the setting or should I just look for the 2e boxed set? |

(Because some of the RL 3e line have flaws which I feel you need to be warned against. Most of the books are perfect, but somehave very easy to pinpoint and eliminate flaws) Joël |

#4gottenJul 31, 2006 16:13:07 | The DM Guide is fine as is. The Players Handbook is a 3.5 update of the 3.0 Ravenloft book. However, while 98% of the book is similar, the editors added a few new rules that succeeded in getting everybody's opinion that they are silly. FYI, funniest is that the editors said after the riot that these rules are optional, while they are not presented as such in the RL PH. So you should read these reviews : http://www.fraternityofshadows.com/DrawingRoom/Ravenloft_Products/3rd_Edition/PlayersHandbook.htm There are a few erratas as well (erratas that were published after the 3.0 book, and strangely these were not fixed for the 3.5 book) http://www.fraternityofshadows.com/TheVault/RL_Errata.htm Welcome to the mists Joël |
#5darkorJul 31, 2006 16:23:14 | Thanks! Just to know, as anybody update the rules for the nightmare lands? (sorry to bore you with that, it is one of my favorite Domain ^^') If no, then I found my self a new projet do complet :D |
#6rikutatisJul 31, 2006 17:04:04 | Gotten: I bought the S&S Ravenloft Core Rulebook. I take it that's the 3.0 version right? I thought so when I made the purchase, although I didn't know there was a 3.5 update. It doesn't seem to be very rules heavy though, so I might not need the update. Is it enough to start a campaign or do I need some other fundamental book? Thanks for your help! |

This netbook wasn't rule heavy, but full flavor so you might enjoy this. Gotten: I bought the S&S Ravenloft Core Rulebook. I take it that's the 3.0 version right? Yep (to be sure, it's the one out in year 2001) Is it enough to start a campaign or do I need some other fundamental book? Thanks for your help! It's fine as is, if you have a large imagination to design your own stuff. Otherwise, I'd strongly suggest the Gazetteer serie (I to V) to start with. But all the books (except two) are really worth the time spent reading them! Also, VRG to the Mists is a free download. You can get it on the S&S tremendously useful otherwise Ravenloft page. Joël |
