Sep 12, 2006 10:53:44 I am starting up a Ravenloft Campaign play by post. I can't really find anyone in my new neighborhood for a tabletop game and I have had pretty good success with both an Eberron play-by-post and a Shadowrun version.

It seems to really fit the mood and setting of Ravenloft since the need for ultra-descriptiveness and tension are needed more so than other settings. I am soliciting for people who would like to join up. The campaign will start this week or next depending on when I can get the requisite number of people.

For those that don't know what the heck I am talking about let me give an example of what it would look like:

Furin the Fury (male dwarf fighter 12)
I boldly stride towards the mummy, Axe of Glittering in hand, hacking with all my might at the foul undead creature.

DM(me)
the mummy recoils from the holy axe, trying to evade it's bite. you succeed in striking it, tearing through it's fibrous, desecrated flesh.

Elanor (female human wizard 11)
Since Furin is in melee with the mummy I wont fry him with a fireball. Instead I will take a quick look around to see if any reinforcments have arrived and if not, then I will hurl a flask of holy water at the ancient dead.

your 6th sense alerts you to danger. A veritable legion of skeletal humanoids have used the din of battle to mask their movements and they stand just beyond the entrance to the room you are in now. They continue shuffling towards you, malice evident in their red pin-prick eyes.

and on and on it goes through an entire campaign

Sep 12, 2006 16:55:55 What races and classes are you going to allow? Are we starting at first level? Are psionics available in your campaign? I was also wanting to run something but found a lack of players and would rather play than DM at the moment.

Sep 12, 2006 19:54:55 most, if not all, races and classes including psionics though if it is exotic we can talk it over.

I am ironing out a few particulars about the campaign itself but it will not be starting at 1st level, partially because it allows players to use different races with higher level adjustments, and partially because Ravenloft can be much more difficult to handle than adventurers of similiar level in, say Forgotten Realms.

The website will be up and running by the end of the week, hopefully.

Just need some souls with a tenous grip on their sanity willing to venture out at night with nary a torch or dagger.

Sep 14, 2006 21:17:09 How many other players are there? Are we allowed to play evil characters, or if a character turns evil, will we lose the character? I have a gnome necromancer that I want to play, but I see him either going evil or toeing the line so close that he goes insane.

Sep 15, 2006 4:42:51 Right now there are 3 others. I am not too keen on an evil party for Ravenloft, though my favorite and most powerful/successful character was part of an evil group in FR.

Insanity isn't gonna do much for the party and going the evil route will probably tend to be more of a distraction as time goes on. However, all creatures have their flaws. And non-native beings especially, have little or no comprehension of the inner workings on the Domains of Dread. Most spellscasters in other worlds don't think twice before casting most of their spells. But here, those very same spells come with hidden little prizes.

I will post more in-depth in the forum later today.

Sep 15, 2006 9:16:46 Chalk me up as interested; it's been too long since I've had a chance to game at all, let alone in Ravenloft. Unfortunately, I don't have much experience with PbP games. So while I'm eager to play, I'm not exactly sure how to go about it.

As for evil characters. I love them of course and have had great success playing them in other campaigns in other worlds but don't particularly wanto them for this Ravenloft Campaign.

I think it would be somewhat of a distraction, especially if the other members are being, or trying to be, truly righteous and heroic.

Of course, no one is perfect all the time and even goodie goods screw up and suffer for it, but to have a character that sets out that way in ravenloft, inevitably will effect the others profoundly. So for this campaign anyway, i don't think it's a good idea.

By the way, you might already know this, but you are of course invited to play on the RPG boards of the Ravenloft FoS (see my sig). There are many Ravenloft campaigns going on there simultaneously.

And should the campaign get big, we can get a special board only for your own Ravenloft campaign.

Sep 16, 2006 10:46:50 I am very familiar with the inner workings of spells in RL, which is why I figured my necro would end up turning evil or insane. Not that I planned on making him evil mind you. Unfortunately, the DPs don't like people messing with necromancy and the undead, and most people who do usually fail at least one power check!

This might have been posted on your site but again I did not see any reference to it yet. But, what levels are you expecting us to be at when we enter Ravenloft? Are we all starting out at Level 1? etc.
