I'm DMing a group of 2 gnomes. 1 tinker and 1 priest. They are groundling, but just contacted the Arcane to buy a skyship.
I (playing the arcane) porposed them a gnomish sideweeler. But I was looking favorably also to the gnomish whelk. Expecially becouse in my home planet fantasy world, I have no differences between "tinker" and "illusionist" gnomes. I only have rock gnomes and sky gnomes. And any gnome could be of any gnome allowed class.
The priest character would be a perfect helmsman, losing spells but not priestly powers (being a sky gnome he is a Zephir (sky god) priest, so he is able to shape change to a crane 3/day).
Looking at the whelk ship... I see there is no room for the helm!!!!!!
Does anyone discovered this already? Did you resolved it someway? I was thinking to put the helm in room 8 of main deck.

you can just bolt a helm on pretty much anywhere.

of course, if it's a gnomish helm you'll probably need some more room, but otherwise you can put it just about anywhere you want.

Yes, but all other ships have an helm room marked on the map! I find strange that whelk does not!

Unlikely. Whelks are made by Illusionist gnomes who are more than happy to distance themselves from their crazy krynnish cousins.

The captains quarters look like the most likely place for a helm. Its up there on my tactical choices at least.

You're right, I never noticed that before. The Whelk lacks any sort of bridge, the traditional location of the helm. I think your suggested location for the helm is as good as any.

Btw, one more thing to consider: if you're running a gnome-centric game, there's absolutely no reason why you couldn't take a design you like and scale it to be used by the gnomes. Such as a Gnomish Man-O-War or Gnomish Hammership. Just a matter of what design you like the best.

I'm playing a gnome-centric party in a NOT-gnome-centric multiverse. So whelk is a good enought ship!

Just wanted to make the suggestion. Can work for enemies, too. Say, the kobold scorpion or the goblin wasp.
