#1zombiegleemaxNov 22, 2006 3:39:10 | Where can I find 3.5ed stats on nightmare beasts? Has anyone converted this creature? I rummaged around the archives and only found a 'tracker' nightmare beast so far. Still, that was pretty cool and close to what I'd imagined. |
#2ZardnaarNov 22, 2006 4:05:33 | The Monster Manual 2 has nightmare beast but I don't think its the traditional DS one (I haven't compared them to the 2nd ed version to be honest). Not really a CR 15 creature either as it seems weak for its CR but its 3.0 and the MM2 which are both very wonky on CR. |
#3dirk00001Nov 22, 2006 9:46:41 | Yeah, that version of the NB isn't that close to the original DS version, although if you advance it's HD some, modify it's spell-like abilities and give it either the Phrenic template or just tack on some psi-like abilities (and an additional +2 CR or so for 'em) it works okay. |
#4kalthandrixNov 22, 2006 9:51:39 | Kam did a revision of the nightmare beast a while back - it was posted as a link in the Archive ;) But here is a link for it too - enjoy - Athasian Nightmare Beast |
#5KamelionNov 22, 2006 11:13:03 | Yeah, that's pretty much a direct port-over of the 2e version, mixed with the 3e one that appears in MMII. It was a preliminary draft and I wasn't completely happy with the result (too weak for the CR, mainly) and had plans to get a beefier version ready for the final version of ToA (along with other variants suitable for epic play). Other projects demanded my attention though, and I have since retired from active duty at athas.org. I might revisit it at some point (I occasionally find myself with both time and inclination at the same moment, a rare occurence these days) but if someone else wants to take it and run with it, that's cool too . |
#6zombiegleemaxNov 22, 2006 11:47:32 | Very nice!! Thanks for the link to the thread. I enjoyed reading it and the comments. A lot of the powers I was hoping to see were in there, maybe more hit points and other minor refinements and I'd be delighted with it. I think someone on the boards hinted that these beasts may have been used as steeds by the SKs during the cleansing wars. Now that sounded interesting, i.e. any link between the NBs and the SKs, anyone got more info on that? |
#7SysaneNov 22, 2006 11:57:14 | Very nice!! Thanks for the link to the thread. I incorporated them into the history of the tari that I posted awhile back. They were a lesser/primitive version of the current day NB's called rel-vorn which were used as pack animals by the tari of the Green Age. The rel-vorn were later altered thru powerful magic by Kalid-Ma into their present day form in order to be used as a weapon against his assigned race thoughout the Cleansing War. |
#8cnahumckNov 22, 2006 19:33:32 | I have it that the Nightmare Beasts were actually made and then used by a race that was cleansed during the Wars, but after they were wiped out, the forces of Rajaat took over. |
#9PennarinNov 22, 2006 22:43:55 | I have no idea what rule of english would govern this, but I suspect Rel-vorn ought to be written Rel'vorn. Anyone can illuminate me with the appropriate rule? |
#10KamelionNov 23, 2006 2:24:04 | I have no idea what rule of english would govern this, but I suspect Rel-vorn ought to be written Rel'vorn. Well, it's a made-up word so no English rule need apply. But the apostrophe in Rel'vorn usually indicates a missing letter or letters, and suggests that the word is a contraction. Whereas the hyphen in Rel-vorn merely suggests that the word is a compound of some sort, and nothing is necessarily missing. |
#11PennarinNov 23, 2006 3:02:47 | Thanks Kam, pretty much answered it. No I'll go find out what a hyphen is... |
#12SysaneNov 23, 2006 8:11:48 | Don't the rhulisti use the hyphen a great deal in their language? |
#13flindbarNov 23, 2006 9:14:35 | Don't the rhulisti use the hyphen a great deal in their language? .... or maybe a life shaped weapon they use ....the hy-phen ;) |
#14ruhl-than_sageNov 24, 2006 19:22:11 | Don't the rhulisti use the hyphen a great deal in their language? Not sure about the Rhulisti, but the Ruhl-Thuan certainly do and they are the closest thing to Rhulisti in the present age; having preserved as much of the old culture as possible. |
