Ok, I'm not feeling too good, for sure.

For a moment, I thought THIS was really Van Richten!

Ha! Guys, great April's Fool, this year. :D

Oh. Wait, we're in DECEMBER!

Yeah, it's pretty much crap. They can make a no-name ranger that looks exactly like Tanis but they decide to make an asstastic Rudolph Van. If they even thought about making even a tiny change in Drizzt the higher-ups would kill the idea but they give them free reign to butcher Strahd and then VR.

I was thinking about buying a wad of minis for a Unhallowed... now I probably won't.

Wait. You mean this is NOT an April Fool? :D

A Google search on "van richten miniature" turns up nothing. What gives?

Read everithing about this undead destroyer, renown for being an uber-powerful cleric who use to kill undead with his mighty hammer, (even before researching about them, cause research is for sissies :D) HERE.

Yeah, that's what I get for being away for a week (had a nice "Christmas" visit with family, though-- the USPS wants my husband back in harness on the 26th so we do our holidays a bit early) and not catching up on the Fraternity of Shadows first.

Looks like they remembered the Van Richten name but just put it on a straight-up "special enemy for Strahd" mini, which is understandable if wrong-- to play a bit of devil's advocate, the research style we associate with the good doctor is not really fun for a straight-up minis wargame, which is what this guy is for.

That said, I don't particularly like the mini even as a mini, much less as a Van Richten mini. He *might* make a good Bastion Raines in a pinch (though the one illustration of him in Gaz2 gives an impression not of physical power but of sheer righteous fanaticism).

dr. richten was a slender thief of sorts. he was crafty and keen. he was a book read hero. he bumbled through most things and was able to write about it. his picture would be more like elmenster's. but not so grand in stature. more like someone that neglected to eat his post-toasties. lol

Dennis Mize, who sculpted the original Van Richten mini back in the day, explicitly modeled him on Peter Cushing's Van Helsing in the Hammer Dracula films:

A good choice, I think.

(Darn, couldn't inline the image. It may be not-hotlinkable, so you might need to cut and paste the link)

Another Ravenloft-video-game-crossover joke that few people here will likely get:

It's Gunther Hermann from Deus Ex!
