Subject: New home for birthright.net
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed

OK, folks, as you may have gleaned by surfing around for BR related
information, birthright.net was recently hacked. Apparently some
schmuck from Brazil got in through a backdoor of the birthright.net
software and wound up with access to all kinds of stuff on the server
itself. The folks maintaining the server have apparently had some
trouble with the birthright.net site in the past and it represents a
pretty big amount of bandwidth for them, so they've decided to nix
their hosting of the official Birthright website. Oh, well.

So Arjan and crew are looking for a new home for
birthright.net. Does anyone on the list have information, a service,
etc. that might get birthright.net a new home?

well the forums here on wizards are not really used by the birthright community. this may be the cause that i have made a web-interface for the official mailinglist since not all fans like to use a list, but rather post on a forum like.

so i have made a mailinglist connection that sends the mailinglist posts to the forum on birthright.net and vice versa. this way both groups can communicate with eachother

and a little scoop: we are currently working very hard on a wiki site for birthright, which we will launch approx first week of 2007

The prospect of birthright being a dead game offers some opportunities to start a new campaign setting. Perhaps one that lacks gods (or immortals) and can focus on a medieval setting which is a land in turmoil.

How about Pax Britanicus?
Various baronies at war over the entire british isles as we look at a 1066AD where the would-be king is dead and saxon and normans who would be its masters. No magic, no clerics, no gods, no monsters, just brutal overlords who must negotiate and fight and plunder and poison their way through a thousand rivals to claim the Siege Perilous.

Something I wish someone would do is to emulate the "how to use this book in eberron" series of articles.

It would help spark debate too I would think.

Was it ever alive?

it won the best new rpg in 1996. Personally it was the most fun I've ever had with D&D. From 1999 - 2001 I ran a group consiting of over 40 players, 5 kindgoms meeting every other week.

It was the most amazing RPG event I have ever seen. It spanned the gap between AD&D and 3.0 survived the conversion and still I have players tell me that's the most fun they have ever had. The focus wasn't on killing and looting, it was on forging a successful kingdom and dealing with the challenges and threats I presented to their nation.

It was a wonderful product, in fact I have just launched a new campaign of it, and although it's only 5 players they are enjoying it.

I'm Using the Move Troops Regency Spell in my Mystaran Campaign (Empire of Sar: Located in the Armpit of the Immortals-a geographical location) The Magic Level in Mystara allows for it so what the hey, birthright fits into the Mystaran Campaign.

I do not know much about the world. What was the premise behind it?

In a nutshell, Cerilia (the Birhtright world) is a low-magic setting with a very "medieval" feel. PCs can be common heroes or become powerful rulers who dabble in politics diplomacy or warfare to advance their realm.

You can read my review over on dragonsfoot.org:

and/or read the intro available here:

Also check out the other Birthright downloads on the wizards OOP downloads page:

I wonder if I can download the released 3.5 material (or the betas for that matter) of Birthright 3.5 without logging in birthright.net

At the moment, no. I suspect it is a security measure. But there is nothing complicated about setting up an account, even if you never use it again.

How do I make an account that can download the 3.5 conversion?

www.birthright.net was misbehaving yesterday but things seem to be back now.

To make an account on www.birthright.net, go to http://www.birthright.net/forums/register.php and follow the instructions.

Once logged into your account, go to http://www.birthright.net/forums/downloads.php?do=cat&id=4 to access the D&D 3.5 version of the Birthright Campaign Setting (aka the BRCS).

I suggest that you download the full BRCS document, and chapters 1 & 2, which have been completely reviewed and revised by the BR.net community (ie. "sanctioned"). The remaining chapters will still work but still need synchronising with Ch 1 & 2, and further revisions to smooth out a few things and finish the step from 3ed to 3.5.

* Full document (originally designed for D&D 3ed) http://www.birthright.net/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=26

* Chapter 1 http://www.birthright.net/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=27

* Chapter 2 http://www.birthright.net/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=28

Have fun!

Birthright in my opinion is the best-written campaign TSR ever produced. The game material, artwork and ideas contained in the original series is definitely the best gaming material I ever invested in. There is a good mix of detailed information and brief story threads that allow any DM with a little imagination to conceivable run a campaign forever without running out of things to do.

Our group has always taken the view that Cerilia is just another campaign world. We have played a couple campaigns as regents but mostly we enjoy leaving the domain turns as a sidebar or tool for the DM to use and allow the group as players to play as a party just as they would in Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, Dragon Lance or any other game world.

Even though our group prefers to use a modified 2nd Edition AD&D, Player’s Options rule set combined with a good mix of house rules. We have tried D&D 3.0 & 3.5; it was not to our liking.

Just a few thoughts
.............................

Rule #1: If the rule does not work get rid of it and make one up that does.
Rule #2: GM has discretion over all rules.

Wolf Guard moto "We kill things because we know how"

Personal favorite game quote: "Assign the enemy stats, give me a hot D20 and WE SHALL BE VICTORIOUS"

Well Im starting up a new campaign, so far I have 4 people that will be the regents of the areas of Ilien, Medeore, Roesone and Tuornen. IT should be fun, playing as a regular group and using the Kingdoms as a sidebar when we are away form the table. I can't wait! Of course we are using the AD&D rules, not 3.5

How do you get rulers for different kingdoms to adventure together? I've always found that the most difficult campaign to justify. It's much easier to have them split law, temple, source, and guilds.
