#2CthulhudrewFeb 03, 2007 15:12:37 | Mystara homunculi are different from the "standard" ones (though I personally discount the "immortal avatar" aspect of them). How about Huptzeens? |
#3agathoklesFeb 03, 2007 16:25:59 | In addition to Blue and Red Imp, and to the three types of Homunculus (Fylgar, Gretch and Ulzaq), there's the Tabi (appropriate especially for Davanian wizards). Since more common familiars are animals, Batracines can also be used for Lupin wizards on the Savage Coast, as can Grudglings for Rakasta wizards (the latter are actually said to have been created as pets and familiars for the Rakasta). Fundamentals can also be used, IMO, since many Mystaran wizards are elementalists and Fundamentals are basically small elemental "animals". |
#4culture20Feb 03, 2007 18:09:00 | SC: A Voat could be a good familiar for a powerful Savage Coast mage (after being properly cleaned up, given a cinnabryl collar, and having remove curse to supress its affliction). If they weren't intelligent, a mythuinn folk would be cool. Trosips, perhaps. Vulturehound, Cinnavixen, Marine Cat. A lyra bird, but the mage would have to infest himself with cardinal ticks or Inheritor lice (more likely the latter) in order to feed the bird. HW/Isle of Dread: Mages in the Hollow World might have tiny dinosaurs or other extinct animals like trilobites. KW: A mage in Darokin might have a Plopped or Sprackle if the timing were right. Giant Shrews/Ferrets? Giant Centpedes/Bees? |
#5zombiegleemaxFeb 04, 2007 3:03:38 | I allow as Mystaran familiars: Aryth, Bogan, Fylgar, Gretch, Ulzaq (from TSR2501 Mystara Monstrous Compedium appendix), Grudgling (from Savage Coast Monstrous Compendium appendix), Leprechaun, Pixie, Sprite, Wood Imp (from PC1 Tall Tales of the Wee Folk), Tabi (from PC2 Top Ballista). Some familiars are logically linked to some region/kind of mage, but all are allowable at least to someone. Creatures from PC1 & 2 are character classes and are allowed to rise in level. It could seem strange for a familiar to rise in level, but it was allowed in Gaz2 Principalites of Glantri, where such a familiar was called a "sidekick". They allowed also humans and elves to be sidekicks, but that's too out of "familiar" in my campaign. I think it could be interesting to allow also some creature suggestet here, such as batracine, marine cat, plopped and fundamentals. |
#6ripvanwormerFeb 04, 2007 3:26:47 | Yeah, I think the five types of familiars in the Mystara Monstrous Compendium Appendix encompass both "red and blue imps" and the "homunculi" from the Creature Catalog. Bogans, associated with the Sphere of Entropy, can be thought of as essentially the same as the Glantrian red imps (even though they're not red). Fylgars, associated with the Sphere of Matter, can be thought of as essentially the same as the Glantrian blue imps (even though they're not blue). That's not to say that those spheres couldn't have more than one kind of familiar working for them - I just like the bogans and fylgars more. Ulzaqs are associated with Energy, aryths with Thought, and gretches with Time. I think the sphere-linked familiars work better with the Mystaran cosmology than the duality implied in Principalities of Glantri. |
