#1bigjohn01Mar 14, 2007 18:38:07 | Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows of any named thieve's guilds that populate the Flanaess? I've found evil magical societies and dark cults, but no thieve's guild. I can simply make some up, but was wondering if anyone knew of any source information in the 3.5 line. Thank you. |
#2ripvanwormerMar 15, 2007 0:27:07 | There are several. The Greyhawk Thieves Guild (in the Free City of Greyhawk) is an important one. Dyvers has a gang of criminal families called the Alliance that has an ongoing feud with the Thieves Guild in Greyhawk. Other cities with thieves' guilds include Rauxes, Orred, Stoink (I think), Darnagal, Gradsul (several powerful ones), Littleberg, Oldred (specializes in burglary), and Rookroost. Other than the Greyhawk Thieves Guild, however, I don't think there's much detail on any of them (Greyhawk's has quite a bit of detail, though). I'm not aware of any guilds that have names given other than "the thieves' guild," other than Dyvers' Alliance. The Alliance is mentioned in Slavers (a 2nd edition book), and doesn't have anything more about it than I've summarized above. The Scarlet Brotherhood is something like a thieves' guild insofar as many of its members are rogues. They have more important things on their minds than burglary, however. There are a number of organizations mentioned in Complete Adventurer and Complete Scoundrel that could be adapted to a Greyhawk campaign, though none of them are explicitly placed anywhere in the Flanaess. You could argue that the Eyes of the Overking from Complete Adventurer refers to the Overking of the Great Kingdom of Aerdy, and they're a group of rabid Aerdi who seek to rebuild the Great Kingdom to its full ancient extent. |

#4pauln6Mar 15, 2007 8:07:21 | If you can get your hands on it, there are some info in the 2e Complete Thief's Handbook: Darn - I think my 2e complete thief is locked in my Dad's loft! Does anybody know if there is any background information on these two or just stat blocks? I might have to dig out my old stuff for my gazeteer! Some LG regions have produced Metaorgs for the local thieves' guilds containing interesting names and a little bit of background. Generally, most thieves' guilds are just used as a game device to give larcenous rogue characters a place to hang out and train. I've only done a write up on a few countries so far but Greyhawk, Rookroost (Fate of Istus), and LG Keoland (mostly about the Shadowdark freelancers) seem to have a fair bit of information. Renfus of Stoink runs the thieves in that Bandit city, and the Alliance of Dyvers is not a guild per se, but a loose association of local thieves. |

#7bigjohn01Mar 15, 2007 18:05:08 | I must say thanks for all the information you have provided. I plan to use the Dyver's Alliance since, coincidentally, my PCs are currently in Dyvers. I believe I can get my hands on the 2ed Complete Thief, I would just have to do alot of digging through some of my friends basement boxes!:D Also, thanks for the tip on complete adventurer. I picked that up today and found some nifty bardic colleges and thieves, bounty hunter, and rebel guilds. |
#8ripvanwormerMar 15, 2007 20:57:26 | the Alliance of Dyvers is not a guild per se, but a loose association of local thieves. It's an association of local criminal families; I think of it as a council of mafia dons. The families of the Alliance act like the stereotypical Mafia in many ways. |
#9thanaelMar 18, 2007 16:27:20 | According to the Kurell article in Polyhedron #132 Arch-Avenger Vensch Estende (CN hm SP14/T12) secretly presides over all three rival thieves guilds active in Kalstrand and dreams of the day when Overking Xavener dances to his whim as well. Note that those are his 2E stats, he's a specialty priest of Kurell. In 3E that would translate to Rogue4/Cleric14 or Rog5/Cleric13. |
