What are your thoughts on the destruction of the Mystaran Universe and the departure of its peoples in a mass migration into Spelljammer space?

They are forced to penetrate deep beneath the surface to the crystal sphere boundary and pass beyond...

Hmmm.... given that this is a place for people who love Mystara and that Spelljammer isn't very popular here, I doubt many people will find this a good idea...

Yet if tomorrow the WOTC came by and decided to officially destroy the Mystaran Universe throwing survivors into Spelljammer space...and asked you for ideas on this end of the world Tournament to be Played out at GENCON2010, What would you suggest?

We talking "City of Stars drifting through the Phlogiston" (lacking a Helm) kind of stuff.

I love Mystara. I love Spelljammer. But the idea that Mystara's SJ-type crystal sphere is deep underground strikes me as being very silly indeed. It's just not something I could take seriously.

I don't mind Spelljammer either. In fact I've been warming up to it lately. I don't like the idea of Mystara being in any kind of reality shared with the Forgotten Realms though, and I certainly don't like the idea of destroying it.

Fortunately for Mystaran Universe it has no crystal Sphere Boundary beyond the planet Mystara. There is no limit to the size of the Mystaran Universe. Thus the only possible location for a crystal sphere Boundary is deep beneath the surface.
The Planet Mystara (the elemental debris of Earth, Air, Fire, Water) sits about the crystal Sphere boundary. Thus only the subsurface civilizations would have access to Spelljammer Space.

What I am telling you is that they have just lifted the Isle of Dread, will probably put the Hollow World in its own crystal sphere down wind from Torilspace...

I would say in the case of Mystara you would be recycling the Alphatian backstory. Except for the Spelljammer part.

Who are they? WotC? Paizo? Seems highly unlikely.

Not quite. No crystal sphere in outer space has been defined for Mystara, since canonically, it wasn't relevant to Mystara, not being a part of teh SJ universe. But, except for some minor incidental references to other solar systems (very easily retconned into other crystal spheres), there is nothing in Mystara canon that says there can't be a deep space crystal sphere.

The Planet Mystara (the elemental debris of Earth, Air, Fire, Water) sits about the crystal Sphere boundary. Thus only the subsurface civilizations would have access to Spelljammer Space.

If you do this, you'd actuyally be radically changing thewhole concept of the crystal spheres, because this particualr sphere would not actually be a sphere. At best, you'd be looking at a weird non-Euclidean Klein bottle.

What I am telling you is that they have just lifted the Isle of Dread, will probably put the Hollow World in its own crystal sphere down wind from Torilspace...

I, for one, would avoid any product that endoresed such a universe. It's just too silly.

In terms of physical travel, it would be an impossible journey to make anyway. Pulling out the intervening rock would only make the oceans flood in. or if you go spelunking there instead, you're left wanting a ship when you actually pass through.

Plus, canon Mystara has defined the exact nature of the world shield that is deep underground. You can quite safely pass through it, assuming you can survive the volcanic heat, monsters, and gravity changes. Note that the City of Stars itself is in a natural cavern where you would place the crystal sphere, which would force even weirder contortions on the shape of your sphere.

Basically, you can't put a crystal sphere there, because there is already very heavily documented stuff there.

Well now you have criticised it to death, lets have some ideas on a mass exodus of Mystaran Civilizations and refugees into the Phlogiston...

What is the point of this?

WotC is not going to to do any of this, particularly with a setting they consider to be dead for the past decade or so.

And even if they did, I can tell you it would be completely ignored in my campaign- never happened, never will. I suspect most people here would do the same.

If you are really intent on destroying our world in some nihilist Spelljammer fantasy, I suggest you go the the Spelljammer forums. You may receive the types of responses you want there, because you're not going to get them here.

While there's certainly room for Mystara to co-exist with Spelljammer elements, I don't see this being a great campaign idea.

Mystarans in Spelljammer yes. Mystara as a whole in Spelljammer, no.

I don't mind Mystara Spelljammer. I'm just not thrilled about destroying my favorite world.

Considering an Oard victory would spell the destruction of Mystara...I thought it relevent that we might contribute ideas to the end of the Campaign world.
Unfortunately no one is actually interested in contributing ideas, just rubbishing the idea and scaring off others who might actually be interested in Mystara having a big bang ending with rammifications for the other campaign worlds.

1. An Imperial Command

"...now where was I? Ah yes: My Dear King Stephan Karameikos, It is with deep sorrow at..." The Emperor fell from the chair in a twitching fit.
"Summon the Cleric!" The scribe leapt forward to help the Emperor of Thyatis as he twitched and foamed on the floor.
He stopped.
"THE END OF MYSTARA IS NIGH! YOU MUST TAKE THE EMPIRE FROM THIS CRYSTAL SPHERE. THE ALPHATIANS WILL AIDE YOU IN THIS TASK!" The Emperor passed out. The Scribe fell back from him as the other guards arrived with a Cleric.

DM Briefing: The Emperor of Thyatis spouts Prophecy during a fit. The Mystaran Exodus is comming.

I expect you'd also get a total lack of interest in such a destructive scenario no matter which campaign world's forum you try to sell this to. All us players, on each game world, play in that world and participate in its forums because we like that world more or less as it is, not because we want to see it razed to the ground and sent out in space.

2. The Isle of Dread Vanishes

The Tenobar Wake sat in open water.
"Are you certain our course was correct?" Captain Thero looked about.
"Yes my captain. We made the turn the evening last at the island of those cannibals." Navigator Harn shook his head.
"That put us within sight of the mistwall. But the mistwall and the Island are gone."

The Island was gone. Immortals. It had to be Immortals.

"Get us back to the island of the Cannibals. We are going to need the fresh water."

DM Briefing: Ships traveling the Thangioth Archipelago discover the entire isle of Dread is missing.

And if the WOTC had done this, you would be hanging out of a clock tower with a rifle...

Do try and contribute a few ideas. It doesnt realy matter if your DM never uses it.

WotC would never do this to any of their settings, because total destruction of a campaign setting is the ultimate way to alienate fans of that setting. They have a bottom line t think of, unlike you and I.

3.Asteroid impact in the Sea of Dread

The Flying Merchantman Mirros Rose moved above the surface of the Sea of Dread.
The Terrible flash in very heart of the Sea of Dread caught the sight of the watch.
"By the Immortals, What was that?" In the distance the deep red glow vanished behind a rising wall of water.
"Oh, Halav!" Devin Hyraksos stared at the wave. It traveled quickly out across the horizon.
"Captain...?"
"What is it?" Captain Gregor Stephanov looked up at the Sailor.
"Wave on the Horizon, Captain. Closing fast." The Captain scaled the rope ladder and turned to look where the sailor was pointing.
A Tidal wave was racing toward them at a terrible rate.
"Halav's Mother! Helm, get us up two thousand feet. Now!"
The Ship surged upward just catching the wave. The wave struck the hull and tipped the ship.

DM Briefing: An asteroid clips the Mystaran Moon of Luna sending large rocks at the planet Mystara. The Asteroid itself impacts in the Sea of Dread sending a wave of destruction through coastal and island communities facing the Sea of Dread.
