Magic Items in Dragonlance

I have been browsing over the DL books and I have noticed that the NPC's of Dragonlance don't have alot of Magic Items. This is one of the things I really like about Krynn. It is more of your skill that makes you great, not your equipment. Looking over the NPC's, it seems that for every 3 levels that the character has, they get one magic item. Is this the standard for Dragonlance characters? It doesn't seem like they have an abundance of mages making magic items like FR does.

Also, my group is getting ready to enter Krynn and they are coming from FR so they have a wee bit more Magic Items than the average joe. How should I handle this? Let them keep their items? Destroy their Magic Items before they enter Krynn? Have them taken once they enter Krynn?

What do you guys think?

Honestly? Dragonlance operates on the same expectations of character wealth and equipment as any other core D&D campaign. We just don't give the NPCs as much magical gear because in part it's expected that they probably have other stuff somewhere or could get it if they needed to. That, and they've hardly ever shown to have anything but powerful artifacts from time to time.

Cheers,
Cam

Thanks Cam.

I guess you have a point there. I still have the original modules and just about every other DL book made, so I always thought that DL was a Magic Low world. My groups average level is 16(which is kinda high for Krynn but my guys are sick of FR and every other character being 20+) and I was thinking that they may have 2 many items for Krynn. But I guess I should worry less about their equipment and worry more about story (our Rogue has Boots of Teleportation, Hat of Disguise, +4 Magic Weapons, etc.). It just seem to me that Krynn isn't a place like FR where Magic Items grow on trees. Anyway, I will take your advice and maybe beef up the NPC a little.

Thanks again!

I always thought that NPCs have fewer items because of pesky adventurers coming around and stealing the items from them. :D :D

Okay I have not played D&D in over 10 years but last time I did play I was in a Dragonlance Campaign which at the time was my favorite setting (it is now Eberron). I personally didn’t notice any major differences with magic items in particular. NPC’s will not typically have the same amount of wealth/magic items as player characters unless they are royalty, the head of an order etc. I recall some of the original hero’s having quite a number of magical items and though few in number they were extremely powerful (i.e. The Staff of Magius, the Disks of Mishikal, Sturm’s sword which was an heirloom and others), plus keep in mind most of the hero’s actually had many minor magical items which they will never really mention in novels (i.e. Rings of Protection, Bracers of Protection, minor magical armor and weapons etc.). I think the bigger deal is transporting 16th level PC’s from another setting into Dragonlance. Forgotten Realms is quite different from Dragonlance as you know, especially where magic is concerned. Your magic users will have to side with an order or be hunted and possibly killed almost immediately. I wouldn’t imagine 16th level wizards would enter Ansalon unnoticed and unchecked. This concept of orders and moons would be foreign to them. There are just a lot of things they wouldn’t know. I personally wouldn’t allow it. Why not just start over if the PC’s are sick of 20th+ level characters running around? Do they want to be the only ones? That’s just my 2 cents. Good gaming!

Yeah but Raistlin only needed 1 (The Staff of Magius), 2 if you count Fistandantilus's spellbooks.

Well...sorta. I liked Red Robed Raist better than Black Robed. But I usually prefer the "heroes" midway through their story when they're coming into their power but not at their peak yet.

I can agree with you there, but I also like black-robed Raistlin. So evil, so sinister, so cool. You just love to hate him and hate to love him at the same time.
