I would like to get into the character, and so far, I have found the two Ravenloft novels to be highly recommended. I've heard that the "Lord Soth" novel isn't very good. Of the Weis and Hickman novels, are there any for someone such as I--someone who's seriously interested in Lord Soth?

Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I haven't read the "Spectre of the Black Rose" so I can't comment on that, but I really didn't like the first RL Soth novel, "Knight of the Black Rose". And that's over my general distaste for anything Soth-related in Ravenloft.

My preferred Soth appearances have been in the two original Dragonlance trilogies- DL Chronicles and Legends. There was one rather cheezy and awkward moment in one of the Legends books, but generally Soth's portrayal in those novels have been the best in my opinion.

The Lord Soth novel isn't very good. It lays out the story (which is good for reference purposes) but the novel itself wasn't that great. To give you an idea, I can't even remember 99% of it so that's how memorable it is.

He gets a mention in the Kingpriest trilogy and I had been hoping that series would trace his final hours but, alas, nope. Nothing more than a cameo.

For whatever reason, Soth is a character that's never really had his story told well in one particular novel.

I agree with Orodruin. Soth has some excellent scenes in Chronicles and Legends. I get goosebumps whenever he comes in. He also makes a short appearance in Dragons of a Vanished Moon, but that's not as good.

I liked Knight of the Black Rose myself. Haven't had a chance to read Spectre yet. Then there's the module When Black Roses Bloom.

Of course, there's DL16 World of Krynn, which has the Dargaard Keep adventure. We don't talk about that much, though. ;)

What I would also recommend would be Dragons of the Highlord Skies, which features Soth pretty prominently. Oh, and there's the short story in one of the Tales II books (either Reign of Istar or The Cataclysm) by Weis and Hickman dealing with Soth.

There are actually a couple short stories about a Knight of Solamnia's sister and a cleric of Mishakel that feature Soth (briefly in the first - still alive, and more prominently in the second - after the Cataclysm). They are both in the anthology "Dragons in the Archives" - this is easier than looking for them in a couple different older books. Pretty good stories.

Here's a link to the book...<--click here

Spoiler alert for Dragons of the Highlord Skies

Dragonhelm, while I liked Dragons of the Highlord Skies (read it in 4 hours), how can you say that Soth featured prominently in the novel? He was in the first chapter and defied Takhisis, even setting an ultimatum, and in the last chapter fighting Kit. Yeah he was mentioned because Takhisis wanted him in the war and none of the dragon highlords had the balls to go get him so Takhisis kept invading their dreams trying to get the highlords to recruit him but that was it. 3 out of 32 chapters. I would hardly call that a prominent spotlight.

His is not a prominent role in the book. On the cover perhaps but not the book.

I know it's not a book, but does anybody remember the PC DOS game Death Knights of Krynn? I know I spent many hours playing that game (and the whole trilogy, for that matter). Soth is the main baddy in that game, but I doubt you'll be able to find it anywhere (or run it on a PC less than 10 yrs old).
