#1zombiegleemaxAug 10, 2007 3:26:57 | I am thinking of converting the old Dark Sun setting to the new rules, however I don't own any of the material. There is some stuff on Amazon, but I am not sure what is important to buy, what is worth buying, and what is stuff I really can not use. What is the difference between the First release in 1991 aand the updated release in 1995? What supplements are worth buying? |

For setting material- the difference between the two box sets is this. The 1991 release was the original box set that extablished Dark Sun. The 1995 release is an updated set which moved the timeline forward 10 years and incorporated the major changes to Dark Sun that had occured during those years, mainly from the novels of the prism pentad. As to which one to purchase it depends on which part of the timeline you would like to game in the original or the updated. For the other supplements: The Veiled Alliance is a good one. It gives details of the secret society and also some culture aspects of each of the city-states. The rest of the supplements are focused on patricular areas of the game world, so it depends on what you want to focus on in your game. Elves? = then get Elves of Athas Merchants? = Duen Trader Raiders? = Slave Tribe Gladiators? = The Complete Gladiator's Handbook Thri-kreen? = Thri-kreen of Athas There are a couple that focus on geographical areas. City-State of Tyr Valley of Dust and Fire (This only exists in the original setting) City by the Silt Sea is a supplement/ adventure. The adventures vary. I started a thread to do reviews of some of the adventures, that may help you decide if you want any of them. http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=760023&highlight=band2 Just remember that all of this material is 2nd edition except the stuff from athas.org. |

#5Silverblade_The_EnchanterAug 14, 2007 17:44:18 | Yeah, do yourself a favour: stick to the orignal, first boxed set for background etc, and use the Athas.org 3.5 rules and IGNORE every other dern thing bar the cool add ons like "Dune Trader". *much hate for way the setting was borked to fit those blasted, dumb novels* Say "NO!" to stupid halflings in spaceships! (Unless it's Spelljammer, in which case, they're ok, but beware of the gnomes! :D) |
