I need some input, I'm looking at a picture by Tom Baxa on page 47 of the first Dark Sun Box Set ‘Rules Book’ (soft cover) showing a female riding some type of centipede like creature. For the life of me I have never been able to figure out what that creature is (been looking since the early 90's), does anyone know or even have a guess on what it is?

Baxa doesn't have that image on his site or I'd provide a link to show you guys what I'm talking about.

Baxa was never the most accurate artist. Check out the DS monster manuals and you'll see just how far off his art was from the descriptions given. My guess is that it was a very early representation of a kank that slipped through the cracks.

Why can't it just be a giant centipede? I thought too that it was probably a misrepresentation of a kank but then later decided that it doesn't matter. Considering all the large and strange creatures on Athas there's no reason that a person couldn't have a giant centipede as a mount.

It could also be an early representation of a cilops

IIRC it's actually the other way around. My understanding is that the descriptions were made *after* the most of Brom and Baxa's art was made, not the other way around. The writers wrote their descriptions to conform to Brom's art, but for some reason, not to Baxa's early work. I think it's a cool-looking bug, and you can mildly spice up a story just by changing appearances of some critter that a key NPC is riding. No big deal if you just use the stats for another critter; players will never know, but they will remember the NPC and her mount from the description. A little story goes a long way.

Oh yes. The most important event in my Vegas trip.

Glad to have you back online, Brax. I have a technical writing question for you, which we can handle by e-mail.
