#1zombiegleemaxSep 09, 2007 21:14:21 | Okay, this is a controversial topic, so let's not get argumentative or personal. I'm just curious. What published source materials form the base for your Greyhawk campaign? Me, I own and use only material published before Gary Gygax left TSR in 1985 (to include not just rulebooks and modules, but also issues of Dragon/Dungeon). I also use the material from his later Castle Zagyg line. How about you? |
#2samwiseSep 09, 2007 22:24:52 | Pretty much everything published by TSR and WotC for GH through to the present, especially the LGG and LGJ. That also includes material not directly for Greyhawk but obviously related, like Die Vecna Die. |
#3extempusSep 09, 2007 23:45:29 | I use pretty much everything published by TSR and WOTC, plus Dragon and Dungeon... |
#4max_writerSep 10, 2007 11:14:28 | I use everything. |
#5aspect_of_bubbaSep 10, 2007 18:23:08 | Everything that I find interesting... be it WoTC, TSR, or some websites like Canonfire. Also I use friends like Max Writer who use to DM a game I was in before I moved. Great DMs use the best material! |
#6GreysonSep 10, 2007 22:21:30 | I use pretty much everything published by TSR and WOTC, plus Dragon and Dungeon... Me, too. I'll rely on any commercially published Greyhawk product from any era or author. Whether the source material is perceived as good or bad, if it is Greyhawk, I've got it and have probably put it to use. |
#7OleOneEyeSep 10, 2007 22:50:41 | Mostly the Living Greyhawk Guide, sometimes referencing From the Ashes or the 83 set. If the game is in the area, I will look at Marklands, Iuz the Evil, Ivid the Undying, or the Scarlet Brotherhood. Also, the stylized drawing of Greyhawk from the boxed set, but not necessarily any of the material. I rarely use adventures and practically never use them as additional source material. |
#8pauln6Sep 11, 2007 2:59:15 | I use everything that I think can add to my campaign including modules, Dungeon, and Dragon. I take inspiration from Living Greyhawk as well, mostly as background padding. I tend to adjust any official stuff that doesn't quite fit, including reducing the number of powerful wizards and weakening the power of the excessive number of wizards' guilds that seem to have sprung up in every city and even a number of small towns. |
#9max_writerSep 11, 2007 10:23:40 | Oh yeah, and Call of C'thulhu D20. |
#10jwtSep 12, 2007 13:04:01 | I use old DMs like Max_Writer. |
#11ElendurSep 12, 2007 15:23:07 | I use whatever (most often 3e stuff), although I suppose when you say 'form the base', that's really just whatever module I'm running. If D3 says X, I don't go through the 30 years of materials that follow to see if anything's changed X. |
#12max_writerSep 13, 2007 6:23:15 | I use old DMs like Max_Writer. Wow, two different people use me. Awesome! |
#13jwtSep 14, 2007 9:54:21 | Wow, two different people use me. Awesome! Didn't you have a Greyhawk timeline? You should post that, if you still got it. Maybe WOTC will pick it up and publish it. |
#14max_writerSep 14, 2007 10:32:44 | I sent it to Dragon: rejected. Sent it to Oerth Journal and it didn't see print - probably too long. |
#15grodogSep 15, 2007 21:47:44 | Pretty much everything published by TSR and WotC for GH through to the present, especially the LGG and LGJ. That also includes material not directly for Greyhawk but obviously related, like Die Vecna Die. Ditto, though I'll pick and choose materials for a specific campaign, and I'll use a lot of non-WotC/non-TSR material too (RJK, EGG, etc.). |
#16GreysonSep 15, 2007 23:45:22 | Didn't you have a Greyhawk timeline? I sent it to Dragon ... Sent it to Oerth Journal ... probably too long. Which timeline are you guys talking about? The GreyChronodex? I have relied on the GreyChronodex as posted at the Canonfire! Web site |
#17max_writerSep 16, 2007 7:49:44 | No, I did an extensive and exhaustive Greyhawk timeline of my own with each entry annotated from which source it came from. The original also has entries from my own campaign that are separated from canon entries so it can easily be stripped down to a purely canon timeline. I went so far as to note birth years for any character in any Greyhawk supplement I could find when they're age was noted. Unfortunately, I've gotten behind on my reading of Dungeon and Dragon Magazines and the most recent stuff from them has not yet been added to it. Also, some dates are guesstimates when they are not specifically noted (such as when Vecna reigned, when the Sulm were in power, etc.) |
#18rob_douglasSep 17, 2007 22:28:49 | Any chance a poor Greyhawk scholr could find a copy for reference? Wouldn't it be great if it was published - like the "History of the Realms" As I understand it - that was a fan-web-project that Wizards bought to package and sell. Good luck, ROB |
#19zombiegleemaxSep 18, 2007 8:09:40 | Yeah. Everything. |
#20max_writerSep 18, 2007 9:57:26 | Any chance a poor Greyhawk scholr could find a copy for reference? Probably. It's not on line but I could probably send it out as a text file or the like. I could probably post it on Canonfire though I'm not sure if they'd want something that huge. I'd like to finish reading the Savage Tide adventures from Dungeon before I put it anywhere however. |
#21jwtSep 18, 2007 19:32:12 | I went so far as to note birth years for any character in any Greyhawk supplement I could find when they're age was noted. Please make sure you not the birth of Corinstali of Celene the Great Wildmage / Spellthief who was so rudely cut short in his epic battle versus the forces of evil. You can also mention his sidekicks. Any chance a poor Greyhawk scholr could find a copy for reference? Quite right AM, I mentioned it for that reason. That was an impressive work, and I certainly think it deserves a history of the realms treatment. |
#22rob_douglasSep 19, 2007 8:49:51 | I think Canonfire would be more than pleased to host your work Max. They have lots and lots of space, so size won't be an issue I am sure, and posting it makes the upload costs (especially in time) to you much less, since you only have to do it once, then send out links. I look forward to it. ROB |
#23max_writerSep 19, 2007 10:19:05 | All right. I'll get working on it again. Might be a couple of months as I'm far behind on my reading and want to at least get all the Dungeon and Dragon magazines in. When was Corenstali born JWT? He was ressed by Baba Yaga, remember? |
#24grodogSep 22, 2007 17:26:52 | Max, when you have the file ready, send an email to editors@canonfire.com to see how they can to manage the transaction. |
#25jwtOct 05, 2007 14:25:23 | All right. I'll get working on it again. Might be a couple of months as I'm far behind on my reading and want to at least get all the Dungeon and Dragon magazines in. When was he born? Man, I don't remember. I do remember that when he joined the campaign it was about 3 or 4 years before the beginning of the Greyhawk Wars boxed set. And he was a young (for an elf) fella back then, maybe 90 or so. So working backwards he was born in 487? Does that sound right? |
#26mojo_ratOct 07, 2007 14:17:54 | The current Game i am taking part in (though not Dming) Is a Drow campaign set in the area around the Vault of the drow. Its taking place 30 years after the vault was sacked by adventurers. the Dm appears to have gone through all the old source material and used them for background story info. then Written in things for what happened in the intervening 30 years. Its the Dm's first greyhawk game and so far he is doing a pretty good Job the various moduals appeared to provide him with a number of usable maps story concepts and info ont he past plots that helped him make the current game good. Even if our characters are not actually going through those moduals. |
