I always assumed that it was just some random picture that Brom did, and the crew at TSR just said "yeah, that looks awesome, put that on the cover." That did happen quite a bit if I am not mistaken; a lot of times something that Brom invented in a sketch or painting would just get written into the setting.

Maby its my age because when I game and take in who is around me I see a bunch of late 20s drinking energydrinks, trying to duck their girlfriends phone calls so we can "Get a bit more in".
