After all, they did bring back Greyhawk. Yes, I remember reading that Troy Denning actually wanted to write some novels about Rajaat and the Green age, but never got the chance to, due to the closing of the game line, so did Lynn Abbey. Does the closure pertain to novels as well? Could someone allow Troy to write more novels, even though there's a hold (perhaps a cancellation now, by WOTC) on game products being produced? |

For gaming material that is probably exactly where Dark Sun was going to be after the Messenger was due to return, just read the New Jedi Order sourcebooks for the SW d20 RPG. Excellent stuff, perfectly compatible with 3.5E, and thematically great. Lifeshaped weapons and armor, genocidal hatred for any type of device, clothing, tool, armor or weapon that isn't lifeshaped (as well as their users), and pathological killing rage towards anyone capable of using mystical powers (Jedi in the SW products, but the original idea was probably going to be directed at Psionics wielders and wizards. Not too sure how I think they would have dealt with Clerics, but the Yuuzhan Vong Shapers (the ones who produced and engineered their lifeshaped items) were the Priests at least some of the Vong deities, IIRC). So, DS lives in a way, it's just buried in another setting, but easily extractable. And adding Rhulisti based on Vong brings in a host of useful items and plot ideas. Vonduun Crab armor is living armor that can heal itself and is just as effective as Full Plate, and the Vong are described using it in every conceivable environment, from deserts to jungles to frozen wastelands, so it must have some innate form of climate control. If not, the Ooglith Cloaker fits the bill, it's an organic environment suit that fits over the armor and can provide comfort to the wearer, even in crushing ocean depths and vacuum of space, so probably would help a lot in the desert as well. There is even living devices to reshape entire environments and worlds, and flora and fauna that could survive in any environment and reshape the climate and landscape. All the cool stuff you need for a game based on where DS was heading is right there in the SW d20 stuff and NJO novels. As for material based on Secrets of the Deadlands (Made, but never printed for consumers cuz TSR shut down the setting), glean what you can from Terrors of the Dedlands (from the good folks at Athas.org). Eventually, they'll release Secrets of the Deadlands in 3.5 or 4E, and it'll be worth the wait. I've read the 2E version, and it's awesome. But, I digress. Denning's plans for DS are still viable options for a campaign, one just has to bring them back home form the SW universe. |

#6terminus_vortexaSep 15, 2007 12:02:03 | I definitely enjoy the LSH. It's excellent stuff, a lot of which is converted 2E stuff, and fully retains the flavor of the original material. The Vong stuff from SW d20 all has a really evil, brutal feel to it, and should be primarily used when you want halflings to start wrecking most of the globe. Some of it (Like Warmaster's Vonduun Crab Armor, which grants +9 to AC and damage reduction 18/-) should only be introduced into higher-level games, as that armor alone makes you just about as physically resistant to injury as a well transformed AB. the LSH has stuff that is more balanced, and can be used across the whole spectrum of character strength. |
