#1flameburgeOct 12, 2007 21:59:12 | Hello, I am a fairly new player to the RL setting. I am very much interested in launching my own original RL campaign for myself and some freinds. My first question is what sourcebooks and/or other materials do I need to plan an effective and memorable campaign? Also I would like to have some basic campaign ideas/hooks for a low level (starting at 1st lvl) party, something that is challenging, but still fun for a party of that experience level. I have heard that RL is a difficult setting to run for low level PC's but I would very much like to make it work, so any help that people can give would be much appreciated. |

For lower level campaigns it's best to choose a domain and stick with that as the place most of your adventures take place at first. The various Gazetteers (now OOP) have details on the continental domains of the Core, including all sorts of details and story hooks. Since they're probably not an option, pick a theme and a domain that seems to fit. I love haunted houses, for example, so Mordent is my first choice. It takes a little work to make each one different--one's more like a dungeon crawl, another a mystery, yet another a night of socializing and roleplaying as the characters and ghosts interact outside of combat. Plus the wilderness of every domain offers low-level characters some appropriate challenges--goblins, kobolds, very wild animals, even the undead like roaming skeletons and zombies in places like Darkon. Then there are the entirely human(oid) threats like bandits. Not every adventure has to be a practice in Gothic horror on the scale of Dracula. Ravenloft has some very ordinary features to it. |
