Barovia is most like Southern Romania, specifically the areas in and around Transylvania. Tepest resembles Celtic Ireland, primeval and untouched by industry. Forlorn is pre-Christian Scotland. Falkovnia is like Germany, especially the southern forests including the Black Forest. Mordentshire is much like the island of Britain--including Wales and Cornwall among other regions. Lamordia is like Renaissance Switzerland. Dementlieu resembles France. Darkon doesn't resemble any one country, instead encompassing much Europe, just as the Roman Empire did (in fact, Darkonese is Latin, or based closely on it). Borca is much like Renaissance Italy and especially Venice during the reign of the Borgia Family (Borjia? Borgia? That's a little too obvious). Invidia resembles Spain (the pogrom against the Vistani is much like the Spanish Inquisition). Richemulot is a tough one; it seems to combine parts of France and Venetian Italy. Nova Vaasa is another tough one, but I'd say an open area of Russia during the reign of Ivan the Terrible. Sithicus has no historial foundation in terms of appearance that I know of. Valachan is much like the redwood forests of Northern California (though I have no idea what the culture is based on). Verbrek is basically primeval forests and rivers, untouched by human hands. Non-core domains (including the islands in the Sea of Sorrows and Nocturnal Sea) I'm even less sure of, but here are some ideas. Paridon is much like London during the time of Jack the Ripper, thought not as advanced technologically. Timor is a sewer; what more needs to be said? Sri Raji is much like India before the European colonization. The Wildlands are like the primeval jungles of Southeast Asia. The Sea of Saragoss is just a sea choked by seaweed that traps ships. Not a lot to elaborate on. Shadowlands Cluster--someone else please answer this. Har'Akir and Sebua are both based on Egypt during the reign of the pharaohs, though the latter is unoccupied. Pharazia is much like Arabia after Islam came to dominate society. Sanguinia is similar to the Nordic countries near the Arctic Circle (Finland, Norway, Sweden, Greenland, and Iceland) during the Middle Ages. Vorostokov is like the Viking era of the Norse countries (but trapped in eternal winter; Firnbul I think is what they call it). Souragne is very much like the South and especially the Bayou during the slave era, though skin color is not the basis of slavery. Rokushima Taiyoo is feudal Japan in almost every way. Bluetspur is utterly alien, a land of rock formations and purple lightning. There is no historical basis I know of. If anyone has more details, or even details on domains I've missed, please post. |

Specifically, it's like rural Britain, not urban (which is what Paridon is for). resembles Spain (the pogrom against the Vistani is much like the Spanish Inquisition). I'd say more like Serbia, Montenegro, etc. The Inquisition was a religious phenomenon; the anti-Vistani fervor is much like "ethnic cleansing" today. Nova Vaasa is another tough one, but I'd say an open area of Russia during the reign of Ivan the Terrible. More like the Ukraine than Russia proper, IMO. Valachan is much like the redwood forests of Northern California (though I have no idea what the culture is based on). It's an admixture of several Pacific Northwest native cultures. Kartakass also has Native American elements, BTW, blended with "fairy tale" traditions of Germany. Wildlands are like the primeval jungles of Southeast Asia. Actually, they're African, not Asian. There's gorillas there. Vorostokov is like the Viking era of the Norse countries (but trapped in eternal winter; Firnbul I think is what they call it). More Dark Ages Russian than Nordic, although those cultures are certainly related IRL. Souragne is very much like the South and especially the Bayou during the slave era, though skin color is not the basis of slavery. Even more Haiti than Louisiana. Slavery's been abandoned there in favor of debt-servitude. |
#4highpriestmikhalOct 31, 2007 12:19:24 | Okay, my bad. My knowledge of geography, social studies, and history is limited to what I've seen on the History Channel and what I learned in high school (and considering I have problems remembering yesterday...). |
#5thanaelNov 01, 2007 6:06:26 | Hey you nailed a lot of them, and for many of the domains it is a bit in the eye of the beholder. |
#6rotipherNov 02, 2007 11:15:24 | Yep, you matched them very well, HPM. (Sorry if I came off like I was being critical: I ran out of time before having to teach a class, and forgot to go back and remark on the ones you got right.) |
#7highpriestmikhalNov 02, 2007 11:49:40 | It's chill. Many domains not listed in the Gazetteers are ones I'm taking a wild guess on. Also, isn't Souragne more Bayou in geography, Haiti in culture? In that case I'd say we were both right. |
