On the flipside of the gritty setting, I feel that another setting which may do well is a setting which goes completely the other way. A lot of people like cutesy furry creatures, cat-girls, and similar things which would be more in the vein of Super Mario, Zelda, Pokeman, and similar artistic influences. Even if it was just one book -a campaign setting book- I could see this type of thing doing well. The typical races would be replaced by alternative races, and everything would be given more of a cartoony My Little Pony meets Anime style.

You might not be getting the support on these boards for this one . But I'm for trying anything. I always thought there should be some cutesy pokemon like animals that would be slightly more intelegant and ideal for wizard familiars. I suspect cat girls and other anthromorphic races wouldn't really be different from each other mechanically.

Something like this is what I meant by cat girls:

...and something like this is similar to the artistic style I was refering to:

...and something like this is what I mean by furry:

A campaign that would encompass all of these ideas and similar ideas is what I have in mind.

Yeah, I did know what you meant by cat girl and furry. They are both part human, part animal, just to verying degrees. And I do realize that cat girls are a fairly specific humonoid used in lots of different anime. I also get the flavor style you want.

To insert cat girls (or spell it catgirls) into a game, you could just use human or your choice of elf info for these. Furries, on the other hand, probably need some sort of anthromorphic animal template applied to humans or elves depending on your flavor. Apply the template to halflings for the shorter Sonic the Hedgehog types.

And I meant something like this or this for the wizard familiar.

This is probably your best option. Unless you really want to add claw and bite attacks (which I highly recommend reading Savage Species and its section on natural attacks and level adjustment before doing), you're better off just tweaking a humanoid race's skill bonuses and calling it a day.

Furries, on the other hand, probably need some sort of anthromorphic animal template applied to humans or elves depending on your flavor. Apply the template to halflings for the shorter Sonic the Hedgehog types.

Nah. Ironclaw and the Usagi Yojimbo RPG managed to do furries without requiring excessive custom stats (with the exception of snakes in Usagi Yojimbo). What you need to ask yourself when designing a "furry" race is, "Do I really want them to be mechanically different from humans or just cosmetically different?"

If you want them to be mechanically different with all kinds of advantages from their heritage like natural armor, natural weapons, the scent ability, etc., then you're going to have to build a race with Level Adjustment. Your players probably won't find this attractive unless all race choices have the same amount of LA. (Even so, don't get too out there or standard monsters may present too much of a challenge!)

Otherwise, just adapt standard humanoid races:
Dwarves -> Badger people
Halflings -> Mouse/rat people
Elves -> Cat people
Half-Orcs -> Bear/boar people
Gnomes -> Fox people

Just shift some racial enmity bonuses around, take some trade, social, and scholarly skill bonuses and shift them to perceptual, movement, or survival skills, and you're done. Easy as pie.
