Hello everybody... I was pondering on some issues that I dont have to clear in my game...

1- What happens when a Obsidian Longsword is of Masterwork quality. According to the inferior materials rule in DSC3 a stone longsword has -1 penalty to hit and damage roles.
SO MY QUESTION IS: DOES A MWK OBSIDIAN LONGSWORD LOSES BOTH PENALTIES OR DOES IT CANCELS THE -1 TO HIT ONLY? Ex: A Mwk Obsidian Longsword would be +0 to hit and -1 to damage? or WHAT??

Also the MENDING SPELL, can it work on (For example) a Obsidian Longsword or Chitin armor in the case it gets SUNDER damage...

Also in the 2nd edition material there was this rule, that whenever you deal the max weapon damage in a single attack with an inferior material weapon (no counting str bonus). The rule said that you had to roll a d20 when this happens, if a 1 is rolled your weapon breaks.

So how does this applies to the DSC3, I know that we got the Sunder abilitie but it kind of removes the flavor of DS, I got an idea on this subject
- When you roll an 8 (not counting STR bonus) with your obsidian longsword you inmediatelly roll another d8 the result will be deducted from the hit point hardness of the weapon? HOW ABOUT I? Any thoughts...

Thanks

From the sounds of it you are correct. Don't see why a mending spell wouldn't work on an obsidian longsword.Theres no equivilent n the 2nd ed rule you're using as far as I know.

Inferior says -1, masterwork says +1, thus +0.
You must interpret those kinds of rules litteraly. If the -1 rule also said it negated any other kind of bonuses, then yes, but this is not what is said.

Really, there's no reason for this rule to mean any different from the other rules in the PH. Only weird polymorph effects and such require some degree of critical thought and interpretation. All the rest is to be taken literally. Hope it helps!

1) Technically, masterwork should remove only the -1 to hit; however, for the sake of simplicity, I remove both negatives.
2) Yes, mending will work
3) I never applied this rule as it just adds additional rolls to combat. I DMed DS in 1st ed but I never used it. In 3x, it wasn't ever added back into the the cannon so I figured a lot of DMs thought as I did about it.
4) Your idea of rolling two 8's would work fine.

Mending would work if the weapon was damaged - I would rule that is would work like a repair minor damage spell (ie only fixing 1 hp because mending is only a cantrip), but if the weapon was broken you would have to go with the make whole spell or another of the repair damage spells - which are in the Eberron books and may have also appeared in the Complete Arcane and Spell Compendium.

As for damaging weapons on rolls - I have a house rule for this. I do not damage weapon on max rolls for a critical hit, but on critical miss (ie on a 1) I have a % check that determins what happens. In some cases, noting negitive occures, but on others the weapon is jarred from the wielders hand or they damage their weapon. When the latter happens, I make them roll damage normally and it is applied to their weapon (less the items hardness). I have actually had someone break three weapons in a single session, but it was still fun and my players did not seem to mind the critical miss items that I had for them.
