#1qualidarJun 19, 2003 15:50:02 | Just wanted to remind everyone that the official Star*Drive site is available for your viewing and posting pleasure at: www.tequilastarrise.net Also, check out the official alternity fan site at: www.alternity.net ~Qualidar~ |
#2zombiegleemaxJun 20, 2003 15:48:48 | There is definitely more traffic at those sites than this message board so I would recommend it for anyone who is fan of the Alternity game and/or Stardrive setting. |
#3ranger_regJun 20, 2003 16:55:19 | Is it safe to assume that Wizards of the Coast have endorsed your fan web site of the game and setting? |
#4qualidarJun 23, 2003 8:29:00 | Originally posted by Ranger REG Well, it's not actually mine, but it does say: "Official StarDrive Site" in the masthead, and If I'm not mistaken they used to plug it in the old description to this very board back before the board updates, when they did that sort of thing. Official or not, you won't find a more thoughtful analysis of the StarDrive universe on the web. ~Qualidar~ |
#5zombiegleemaxJun 23, 2003 12:36:53 | They are the official fan websites. They were voted on by the Alternity fans on the Discussion lists a while back after the WOTC Alternity folks (Jim Butler) asked for the community's nominees. These sites are the place to go if you are interested in downloading fan material or having discussions with other Alternity fans. They are helping keep the game alive and kicking for dedicated fans of the system. www.alternity.net has a Resource section full of fan files. Plus check out the Downloads section for the old emag Action Check and the brand new emag Last Resort. It also has a forum for discussions on all things Alternity. www.tequilastarrise.net also has a variety of downloads and continues to provide TVN news reports that expand the Verge and the Stellar Nations. This site also has a forum with some great discussions on StarDrive related material. Check them out and be happy. Daryl B |
#6ranger_regJun 23, 2003 13:54:35 | Is anyone doing an unofficial Star*Drive conversion for d20 Modern? |
#7qualidarJun 23, 2003 14:13:02 | Originally posted by Ranger REG I originaly started out using the Star Wars rules, but I switched over to Modern. I'm using the Psionics Handbook for mindwalkers, with some skill choice adjustments for d20 Modern rules. I thought that d20 Modern psionics were too limited for StarDrive. Overall it's been pretty smooth, although I am only now trying to come up with a suitable conversion for starship combat. I find the StarWars ships a bit too wimpy for proper Alternity-esque ship combat. I prefer the Alternity (ship) hit location rules, as well. ~Qualidar~ |
#8ranger_regJun 23, 2003 23:47:53 | If you are referring to Star Wars Revised Core Rulebook starship combat rules, they tend to be that way which is suitable for space opera fantasy genre, not hard sci-fi. BTW, have you checked out T20: The Traveller's Handbook as a reference for starship combat? |
#9qualidarJun 24, 2003 9:11:42 | Originally posted by Ranger REG It's funny; when I originally read the Alternity starship combat rules I thought they were a bit disappointing because they didn't capture that "Star Wars" feel that I expected from SciFi. Fast forward a couple of years and I get rules that do that in the Revised rulebook. Unfortunately, I just finished reading five of Peter F. Hamilton's books, which are chock full of exciting ship combat exactly like the original Alternity rules, and I now find that feel far more realistic and preferable. The intervening SW prequel Taint probably hasn't helped, either. I looked at Traveller when I saw all the glowing reviews here, but I didn't get it because of (1) the price, and (2) there's a picture of a man with a german shepard head on the cover. And he's wearing a cape. I could be convinced, however. What are the differences between the Star Wars and Traveller ship combat rules? Not a point by point comparison, more like an explanation of the tonal differences. Do the Traveller rules deal with hit location, for example. How are the shipbuilding rules? ~Qualidar~ |
#10ranger_regJun 24, 2003 17:39:22 | The "dogface" is actually a Vargr, one of the many signature races in Classic Traveller. (Trust me, I've seen the first cover art and it was too comic-bookish.) The ship creation rules is based on the High Guard rules system, also from Classic Traveller. If you want to know more, check out their messageboard. http://www.travellerrpg.com/cgi-bin/Trav/CotI/Discuss/ultimatebb.cgi As for the price, $45, you get more bang for your bucks. Between the latest game software and this, I'd get more enjoyment from the book. (The average lifespan of one version of a game software usually lasts 2 years until a newer version come out.) |
