I know it is has to do with the way they keep track of time of day, but does anyone know what time of day these "Watches" correspond to? Or how many there are in a day? In an attempt to recreate the feel of the novels, I would like to incorporate this into my campaign, but have never been able to find anything on this topic. Anyone? Anyone? Beuller? |
#2jonesyJul 03, 2003 7:32:24 | I'd say first First Watch is the one you have when you setup camp for the night and the Last Watch the one right before you wake up the troops in the morning. I don't think you can define them with accurate times or amounts of watches since it all depends on when you camp. |
#3maladaarJul 03, 2003 8:41:07 | The way they say it in the books makes it sound like Last Watch is Midnight. At least that is the impression I was left with, which is what raised the question. |
#4jonesyJul 03, 2003 9:48:31 | Which books are you referencing exactly? I'd like to check. |
#5maladaarJul 03, 2003 9:59:19 | It was mentioned in The Chronicles Series The Legends Series Second Generation Dragons of Summer Flame and possibly in Dragons of the Fallen Sun Legend of Huma Don't ask me the page, because it has been a while since I read the books. I just always noticed that they usually talked about it when they were either in a city or fortress (referring to when the gaurds made their patrols). It may have been mentioned when the heroes were staying at the dwarven kingdom of Thorbardin as well. |

(friggin computer repair isnt happening fast enough....stuck on a public comp!!) But yes, all those watches you are seeing mentioned are in accordance with actual times on the clock. |
#7jonesyJul 03, 2003 10:08:05 | Would it perhaps have something to do with this? http://www.buddhanet.net/e-learning/buddhism/lifebuddha/26lbud.htm |
#8zombiegleemaxJul 03, 2003 10:14:03 | Not sure on that one......hmmmm.....Astinus and the aesthetics as Buddhists is an entertaining thought though... |
#9zombiegleemaxJul 03, 2003 11:18:58 | What Hickman addresses might not answer your question entirely but here goes. According to Hickman in the Annotated Chronicles: "Each of the hours in the Palanthian day were named...The hour itself is divided into sets of thirty minutes: ' falling ' refers to the minutes from the top of the hour down to the bottom half hour and 'climbing' refers to the minutes from the bottom half hour to the top of the hour. Unlike our own system, however, the hour considered to start at the bottom of the clock. It is not as difficult as it sounds, however, since it has a direct Earth equivalent. Restful Hour was around nine o' clock p.m. This being the case, 'Restful Hour climbing 29' would be equal to saying 'Twenty nine minutes before the hour of nine.' 'Afterwatch Hour falling 30,' on the other hand would be equal to saying 'Thirty minutes past the hour of eight.'" Not really First and Last Watch, but you do see After Watch being 8pm and Restful Watch being 9pm. I'm not sure but I vaguely remember seeing the other times listed or explained elsewhere. Also, in Time of the Twins, they use Dark Watch. I'm unclear what hour that might be, it may be another way of saying After Watch or it may be 7pm? There's also High Watch which is noon I believe. Deep watch is also mentioned, it's sometime late night, I'm not too sure the hour though. |
#10maladaarJul 03, 2003 12:21:30 | It would be cool if we could somehow get the full day using this time system. I seem to recall that when Astinus was scribing the History of Krynn he would often make entries using the term x - Watch. I definitely remember a book using First and Last Watch (although I have never read Restful Hour). I seem to recall rising/climbing and falling as well (although you prodded that into awareness with your statement). |
#11zombiegleemaxJul 03, 2003 12:29:11 | Astinus used the terms a great deal in the Legends trilogy |
#12zombiegleemaxJul 03, 2003 13:27:44 | See page 196, Table 6-7: Hours of the Day in the DLCS for full details ;) I don't have time to type up the complete breakdown, but Last Watch is 2000 hrs. (8 PM) and First Watch is 0700 hrs (7 AM). Christopher |
#13maladaarJul 03, 2003 14:14:33 | Stormprince, Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure if it was going to be included in the DLCS, but you guys are REALLY on the ball. Can't wait to get my copy. :D |
#14zombiegleemaxJul 07, 2003 7:05:44 | Just in case any of you are interested the term High Watch is mentioned in The Time of the Twins on page 274. I happen to be re-reading it for probably the 6th time and when I saw it mentioned I remembered this post. Anyway, just thought I'd let you know. |
