#1lenin97Jul 10, 2003 7:48:11 | I notice the boards have been a little slow this week (everyones probably over in the 3.5 boards trying to nail down a release date ) so I decided to put up an inpromptu poll of sorts. The question ... What is your favorite Dragonlance race? Which race do you find yourself drawn to? Why? Which races history do you know forwards and backwards? Be it the labor loving Dwarves of Thorbardin, the Honorable Humans of Solomnia, or even those Horrifying Creatures the Draconians. |
#2lenin97Jul 10, 2003 7:53:57 | I'll start it off... The Minotaurs have always been my favorite. I devour every single novel that Mr. Knaak writes. The image of the massive viscious but honorable warriors battling each other in the Great Circus or aboard a massive ship just makes me want to wade into battle with my battleaxe held high! I wish that the boards would offer a minotaur avatar for me though! |
#3sweetmeatsJul 10, 2003 9:45:40 | I don't think I have a favourite race really. If I had to choose I would probably say Kender because they make me laugh, and arn't the usual halflings of D&D. |
#4zombiegleemaxJul 10, 2003 10:05:35 | I would have to say the Elves, although Kender and Dwarves would both be a very close second. Kevin |
#5zombiegleemaxJul 10, 2003 10:10:31 | Humans first as always, but after them are the mighty minotaurs. They're just so interesting (and they're BULL-people! ) |
#6DragonhelmJul 10, 2003 10:21:24 | Minotaurs rule! Or they will shortly. Heh heh heh. I'm also a fan of kender, half-kender, and Kagonesti elves. Actually, I'm not sure that there is a DL PC race that I don't like. |

#8zombiegleemaxJul 10, 2003 10:46:44 | Minotaurs are cool as all hell (I play a Krynn-style minotaur i9n a local LARP game I participate in, so I proudly wear a big bulky costume even in extremem heat!) However, from my experience, its the oft-ignored humans of Ergoth trhat get my vote. The books TRY to show the Solamnics as the be-all and end-all of Krynn, but they only suceed in a showing a petty, vain people that THINK they're Paladine's gift tp Krynn... |
#9talinthasJul 10, 2003 10:52:33 | gnomes. tinker, thinker, minoi, gnomoi, smith.... They are the center of change in DL =) |
#10alten_freehandsJul 10, 2003 10:59:01 | It has to be the tinker gnomes! How can you not love em? |
#11jonesyJul 10, 2003 11:05:56 | Dragons of course. Doh! |
#12cam_banksJul 10, 2003 12:18:58 | My favorite race is the XXX, featured in the Bestiary. ;) Cheers, Cam |
#13talinthasJul 10, 2003 12:25:16 | "Dent? Arthur Dent?" "Why, yes, thats me." "You're a jerk, Dent. A real kneebiter." (with apologies to Douglas Adams ;) ) |
#14zombiegleemaxJul 10, 2003 12:37:32 | Hobbits, deffinitely hobbits... Wait, halflings. Pecwae? Umm... Those little guys who always steal things... dwarves? Yes, dwarves! Got to love those dwarves. |
#15brimstoneJul 10, 2003 14:04:28 | LOL! Pecwae are by far my favorite "halfling" type creature. Kender are a close second. As for my favorite DL race. Well...I used to not have one. I pretty much liked them all equally (although the Kyrie were high up on the list). Lately though...in case you couldn't tell...Centaurs are far and away my favorite. Thanks to Dezra's Quest and stuff in More Leaves. I've really come to enjoy the Centaurs. Especially the new split between the crazy Chaos maddened Centaurs and the ones that still follow Chislev and the Forestmaster. Very cool. Long live Tarbash! :D |
#16shugiJul 10, 2003 14:07:03 | Taylings (and taylangs) -- they're the perfect "tag-team" characters. Raistlin and Caramon who? |
#17talinthasJul 10, 2003 14:11:52 | well, behind gnomes, give me Phaethons. Behind them, Titans. and then Irda/Nzunta/Mischta.... |
#18B-naaJul 10, 2003 15:12:35 | Its a tough choice, when you add cool races like Minotaurs and the like in the mix, but Dwarves still come out as my favourite race. Minotaurs may someday rule the world, but nobody digs a hole the way a Dwarf does |

#23zombiegleemaxJul 10, 2003 17:01:20 | Personally, I'm a fan of all major DL Races (and sub-races to boot). |
#24dragontoothJul 10, 2003 17:35:20 | Dwarves, and Minotaurs They make the minotaurs so different from the norm. They aren't monsters, but a race which seeks domance. Least favorite is the elves. Shame that Paladin became an elf. |
#25zombiegleemaxJul 10, 2003 17:59:00 | Dragons are my favourite newhere. Then come the kender the gully dwarves and the minotaurs |
#26kipper_snifferdoo_02Jul 10, 2003 21:33:31 | Uhmm... hmm.. I'll get back to you on that one... hee hee ;) |
#27zombiegleemaxJul 10, 2003 22:31:19 | I'll vote for gully dwarves because I feel they are being left out. |
#28talinthasJul 10, 2003 22:51:57 | i'm proud to say that i did the first 3e gully dwarf conversion =) it was one of the first submissions to the nexus too =) |
#29zombiegleemaxJul 11, 2003 3:25:42 | I think I prefer the big bullies (get it? bull-ies...) with the horns that belittle every other race but the dragons (and perhaps those new blue giants that just popped up): they got strenght, intelligence, honor and style. What are they called again? Ah yes, orcs. Yeah, gotta love those orcs! And in other news... S P O I L E R S P A C E Originally posted by Dragontooth I started to read Dragons of a Fallen Sun yesterday... muchos gracias!! |
#30zombiegleemaxJul 11, 2003 4:48:12 | The Kender. And when the Setting book comes out, they'd better be IMMUNE to FEAR, only going to a save for EPIC GODLIKE fear effects. There are two recorded instances of a kender being afraid. 1. Attempting to enter the Shoikan Grove at the tower of high sorcery in Panthalas - and then, that didn't send him running. It simply made him walk a bit slower... 2. The utter destruction of thousands of kender and their homeland by a bloody huge red dragon. Not your normal one, but one the size of a few dozen football stadiums. Oh... Tinker Gnomes come in second - who couldn't love the gnome flinger ;) -Robert |
#31DragonhelmJul 11, 2003 6:44:00 | Originally posted by Robert N. The gnomes tried a variant on that once - the gnomeflicker. Unfortunately, it gave them bad visuals, and the idea was scrapped after being in only one generation's worth of committee. ;) |
#32zombiegleemaxJul 11, 2003 7:39:26 | Minotaurs all the waaaaaaay! Except now they are dumb. I dont like that. They used to be unwise and hot headed, now they are dumb. I want my Minotaur White robe damnit! Grrrr *grumble* Yarg! Then Gnomes would be a close second. At least they didnt get stupid too. *Tinkers up a rapid fire minotaur-flinger and kills all who disagree* |
#33lenin97Jul 11, 2003 7:51:08 | I'm glad to see everyone posting I think everyone preety much agrees that DL has a unique look to every race. Each has there own interesting aspects and all (possibly with the eception of humans) are have a distinctive flavor and appeal all there own. So I'd have to agree that all the rases are cool:D I despise elves in general (Tolkien's work not included) but the Elves of Krynn are an charming race that I hold dear. On to new business Originally posted by Dragontooth Thanks for the spoiler warning Dragontooth Originally posted by Bredangar Ha ha ha! Not funny!:D |
#34zombiegleemaxJul 11, 2003 15:50:13 | Grrr... They made Mino's dumb. Kaz never struck me as being dull or dim-witted. How, exactly, a race of idiots can become the world's best oceanfarers I'll never know. -Robert |
#35ferratusJul 11, 2003 15:53:45 | Originally posted by Robert N. The ability to think or reason is covered by wisdom. Intelligence is based on the amount of knowledge accumulated due to education. Minotaurs tend to spend more time on the battle-field than the classroom, as a general rule. However, a Minotaur wizard with a 16 Intelligence is a dedicated scholar indeed. |
#36lenin97Jul 11, 2003 15:53:50 | Originally posted by Robert N. -2 Intelligence isn't dumb. It's closmindedness (<-- is that a word?) Besides Kaz was a hero and a superb example of the species :D Also I'd like to note that I'd rather play a less intelligent minotaur than waiting till 9th level to play one! |
#37zombiegleemaxJul 11, 2003 16:13:23 | Wisdom is the ability to discern or judge what is true, right, or lasting; insight and Common sense; good judgment Intelligence is The capacity to acquire and apply knowledge. The faculty of thought and reason. Superior powers of mind. Having been on several ships before, I can tell you from personal experience, you can't just guess how to said and rely on intuition to get you through, you have to know how to sail, and you have to be quick about it (think about some of the waves you see out at sea). Now, not too many people accuse the Mino's of great ability at choosing what is true and right, but everyone agrees that they have the capacity to acquire and apply knowledge, especially that of sailing. -Robert |
#38zombiegleemaxJul 11, 2003 16:30:49 | Originally posted by Robert N. Being ex-Navy myself, I can tell you straight off that there are some pretty stupid people in the military, yet they make brilliant sailors. Yeah, you have to have some knowledge, but a little knowledge goes a long way. Additionally, you hafta remember that every few levels, you get a +1 to a stat...a minotaur wanting to be a wizard would just be sure to apply that bonus to Intelligence then ;) As far as 3.5 is concerned, the "Sailor's" skills are not Intelligence-biased. Additionally, the Mariner class gains an ability called Seamanship, which grants an increasing circumstance bonus to "sea skills" as the mariner advances...experience is a harsh teacher. Christopher |
#39zombiegleemaxJul 11, 2003 17:57:03 | Haha Sure there are stupid people in the Military. They're called Officers, and are kept as far away from actuall work as possible so they don't get anyone hurt :D Sorry, I couldn't resist :invasion: :bounce: :invasion: :pile: |
#40zombiegleemaxJul 12, 2003 16:07:05 | Favorite race? Kender of course! Coming in close second would be minotaurs. then Gully dwarves. Then Gnomes. And then dwarves. And lastly, Kagonesti. |
#41old_sageJul 13, 2003 4:18:41 | My favorite race is the...Gnomes. Specifically, Tinker Gnomes. I try to incorporate a Tinker Gnome in all my campaigns (regardless of the setting), whether it be as a PC, or as an NPC. I enjoy reading about their cultural eccentricities, habits, inventions, basically everything I can get my hands on regarding this race. In fact most of my homebrew DL material relates in some way to the Gnomes. ;) Old Sage of Palanthus |
#42old_sageJul 13, 2003 4:20:14 | As a second preference, I would have to say, Minotaurs. And if your first or second preference is Minotaurs, then my explanations are not needed, as you already know the reasons why ;) . :D Old Sage of Palanthus |
#43zombiegleemaxJul 13, 2003 4:57:58 | Originally posted by Old Sage Bleh .. when I see a minotaur there is only one thing that comes to mind..... prime rib steak. Hooves or no hooves, makes little difference to me ... they make good grub. |
#44dragontoothJul 13, 2003 13:19:40 | Originally posted by Lenin97 The book been out for a year and we still have to give spoiler warning? What is up with that? Not my fault people don't want to buy the book. I could understand if the book was out a couple of months to give a spoiler warning. |
#45zombiegleemaxJul 13, 2003 13:43:45 | Originally posted by Dragontooth You can't expect everyone on the boards to have read every Dragonlance book that is more than a few months old. Be realistic. Spoiler warnings should be given for everything from Dragons of Autumn Twilight to... whatever the newest Dragonlance book is. Which reminds me... I CAN'T BELIEVE PALIN DIES AT THE END OF DRAGONS OF A LOST STAR!! Gotcha. :D |
#46zombiegleemaxJul 13, 2003 20:53:53 | Minotaurs, Humans, Draconians, Dwarves, Gnomes and Kender. Though not in that order ;) Come to think of it there are few races of Krynn I don't like. |
#47zombiegleemaxJul 14, 2003 12:01:18 | I like the noble knights of Solomnia, specially Sturm Brightblade. I also like the silvanesti elves. |
#48zombiegleemaxJul 17, 2003 9:35:48 | I have always admired the Dragons of Krynn. More than any other campaign setting, the Wyrms of Krynn capture the essence of what it means to truly represent these mighty and majestic creatures. No other race can compare, at least for me. :D |
#49lenin97Jul 17, 2003 9:37:55 | I just started "The Doom Brigade" and I have to say that while reading this book, I have a new found respect for the Draconian races that I didn't possess before. |
#50zombiegleemaxJul 17, 2003 9:39:28 | Originally posted by Lenin97 Most who read the Kang regiment books say the same. It's made me really want to play a draconian character in my next RPG campaign:fight!: -Gilles |
#51zombiegleemaxJul 17, 2003 9:46:11 | I have yet to read both those books yet. I can only seem to find the Doom Brigade in the bookstore near me. I have had little luck finding a copy of each of the other 'Kang's Regiment' books. |
#52zombiegleemaxJul 17, 2003 9:47:27 | Sorry to hear that Bookwyrm, pocket dimension bookstores tend to be like that at times, they only carry limited materials. Myself, I tend to buy all my books online now. -Gilles |
#53zombiegleemaxJul 17, 2003 10:04:22 | I have been thinking about that, since this dragon doesn't particularly like to leave his cozy and safe home-dimension. ;) |
#54archmageJul 17, 2003 11:18:02 | The Silvanesti Elves are my favorite race. You can never go wrong with elitist snobs whose king turns their land into a living nightmare and who barricade themselves behind a magical shield that saps their lifeforces. |
#55zombiegleemaxJul 17, 2003 17:02:05 | Originally posted by Archmage I just wonder if we will ever see a world where elves aren't dying out, driven from their homelands by hordes of beasts and humans? Think of a land where the opposite is true. Elves are abundant and wild (Kagonesti) and only pockets of civilized humans remain... even though the elves are still trying to rid themselves of those pests. -Gilles |
#56zombiegleemaxJul 17, 2003 17:37:39 | Elves are almost always the "Utopian Uber-Mench" of a fantasy setting. I guess thats why they get beat up all the time. |
#57zombiegleemaxJul 18, 2003 3:59:27 | How do you mean? |
#58zombiegleemaxJul 18, 2003 8:42:42 | *AHEM* kenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkendkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkenderkendererkenderkenderkender |
#59zombiegleemaxJul 18, 2003 9:07:47 | So which race do you like then?. :D |
#60archmageJul 18, 2003 11:30:33 | Originally posted by DaemonAngel Have you ever read any of the Deathgate Cycle novels by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman? If you did, you would know that statement doesn't apply to that setting. There, the elves are the ruthless badasses of the cosmos. |
#61zombiegleemaxJul 18, 2003 14:28:47 | I have always been a fan of the DL minotaurs, for one main reason. No intelligence penalty. I liked intelligent, cultured, wizardry capable minotaurs. I have always wanted to play a black robe minotaur wizard, with a level or 2 of warrior (or barbarian) to complement his natural strength, and to offset the d4 hit points. |
#62jonesyJul 18, 2003 14:35:43 | Originally posted by Xeros So does that mean that you no longer like them? |
#63zombiegleemaxJul 18, 2003 14:40:39 | So does that mean that you no longer like them? DO they have an int penalty now? I hadn't heard that. They better not, that would **** me off. |
#64ferratusJul 18, 2003 14:51:44 | The Minotaur stats are on the wizards of the coast dragonlance page. Don't worry though, you can still have genius level minotaurs. This isn't 2e. a -2 penalty is overcome by 8th level, and surpassed by 20th. It just means that wizards are less common among minotaurs than among elves or humans. Remember as well that -2 just means a lack of book-learning. Wisdom handles thought and reasoning skills in 3e. There is no penalty for that. If the -2 penalty really bugs you, remove it and add a +1 ECL to the minotaur race. That would mean you wouldn't be able to play it until 2nd level however. |
#65zombiegleemaxJul 18, 2003 14:58:04 | Ack! Ptooey! Do you have a url, I don't know where to find the wizards DL page. I know that means you can still start with 16, it's the concept that the racial average is below the human racial average. Yeah, that means I'd no longer be as big a fan of minotaurs. Maybe it's back to my default favorite half elf for me. |
