#1rooksJul 11, 2003 19:59:58 | Greetings! Long time, no post, fellow DL fans. Boards smooth talker Rooks here, saying hello and hashing up some tpoical conversation. You'll have to excuse my absence lately (been busy with my web site -- see my sig line). Anywho, I wanted to say a few things first. The revival of DL as a gaming line is nothing short of fantastic, and a big thank you to Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, Christopher Coyle, Jamie Chambers, the Whitestone Council, and everyone else who are bringing DL back better than ever. Everything I've seen out of the glimpses of the new material is OUTSTANDING! Now. The question. *insert dramatic music here* Whats the first game you are going to run when you all get your new DLCS (and hopefully AoM)? Peace! |
#2zombiegleemaxJul 11, 2003 20:16:45 | DL module 1, of course. :D In a few days I will be completing my collection of original DL modules and can finally play through the whole series. It only took me 16 years. I had the three comendiums but they weren't complete. After we play through the war of the lance, I hope to play through the Legend series. Which will be a breath of fresh air for me since I will only be gaming with two people. Hard to play the War of the lance with two PCs and a big handful of NPCs traveling together. After ending the Legends, who knows? I may go back in time and play out the events in Elven Nations. Or I may delve into the future. (Once I have read all of the books) |
#3sweetmeatsJul 11, 2003 20:33:59 | When I finish my current 3rd ed DL campaign (Using material from the Nexus site), I'm thinking of an invasion idea such has been discussed in a recent Dragon issue (Which I have yet to see). My current game should wrap about October/November, perfect timing to start a fresh with 3.5 |
#4talinthasJul 11, 2003 20:36:18 | Currently i'm running an alternate chaos war scenario, with spawn and stuff. but when i get the dlcs, i'm going to run DL1 for old times sake =) |
#5zombiegleemaxJul 11, 2003 20:40:59 | It depends. If I get my advanced copy of the DLCS, I'll have to throw together a campaign idea and write 5-6 hours a day between sessions to get a summer game going, which would be just spectacular, 'cause I love writing campaigns like that and scheduling sessions is so much easier during the summer break. If something happens and I don't get an advanced copy, it'll be Key of Destiny in the Fall, which would also be a great (though extremely far away, time-wise), but certain people won't be able to play--very uncool. Either way, I'll be getting and playing Key of Destiny as soon as possible. Deffinitely excited for that. |
#6talinthasJul 11, 2003 20:43:23 | Dude, the day i get it, i'm gonna run the adventure in the back of the book. I'm compelled to =) |

#8zombiegleemaxJul 11, 2003 21:41:39 | My book is isn't coming until early August or late September (isn't that confusing?), but I'm already really excited about it. I'm using the time doing some planning. My PCs are going to be in the Barony of Langtree when it is attacked by a sub-wing of the Black Dragon Army. Most of it is coming out of my imagination, but I'm getting some inspiration from an old Star Wars Adventure Game (WEG version) where the PCs are trapped behind enemy lines. I'm setting up the random encouters for a war-ravaged country. Refugees, Draconian Patrols, deserting soldiers with tales of dragons, the occasional black dragon patroling overhead. It's going to be dangerous, but my PCs are a pretty smart bunch. They'll have to choose their fights and do a lot of sneaking. It'll be mostly non-linear. I have a map which the PCs are going to get their hands on fairly early. I'll have the important locations ready. They can go where ever they want. Eventually, I want them to hook up with the Baron. Maybe do a few covert-ops style missions for him. Maybe a big castle seige. (As the defenders. Boiling Oil?) I also considered having some 'hot head' young rebel metallic dragons (Khirsah-ish) show up to help fight off the evil dragons. They gave us those aerial combat rules for a reason ya know. And what is Dragonlance without Dragon-to-Dragon combat At least two months before the Campaign starts, I have two PCs sighed up and a third interested in a D&D 'demo'. I'm aiming for around 5 PCs total. So far everyone is new to D&D. I've lost contact with most of my old group. The rest weren't interested. One guy played d20 Star Wars with me for awhile. It will be heavily story oriented, especially the mass combats, but there will be plenty of everything. I'll be able to customize it a little better to the PCs after I get a feel for what they like. We're planning several 'rules demos' this summer. So that will help. Jesse |
#9zombiegleemaxJul 12, 2003 9:14:19 | I'm going to run an alternate Chaos War scenario, but I'm curious...what is the adventure in the back of the book about, how long is it and for what level? |
#10zombiegleemaxJul 12, 2003 10:18:35 | As soon as I get my hands on the DLCS and the Age of Mortals, I'll be starting my campaign. I can't remember where I got the idea, but I think it was off this board. The War of Souls. Basically, although I'll have had all my players read through the books, I'll be starting at the start again, with all the characters in Solace, when they hear a voice from inside the Tomb of the Last Heroes... They'll be chasing all over Krynn, with some idea about what's going to happen, but it'll all go a little of course, because it's the bunch of them escorting Tas where ever they think it best to take him, without having him having to annoy Gerrard. They'll experience first hand the death of Caramon, probably be directly involved in the destruction of Qualinost, find Dalamar after all these years, watch the destruction of the Mystics home... and maybe change the course of history. If anyone does insist on playing a kender, I could always get them to play Tas as well, although their careers would probably be quite short, since we'll all know what has to happen to Tas. Hmm. I'll have to make up stats for Takhisis' avatar so someone can kill her. And, depending on how the party turns out, maybe stats for Valthonis, so someone can kill him. |
#11talinthasJul 12, 2003 10:57:59 | i understand that there are two introductory adventures in the back. one 4th and one 5th. other than that, beats me. |
#12zombiegleemaxJul 12, 2003 11:02:08 | Originally posted by The Soulforged very short. the two adventures together accounts for 10 pages. |
#13rooksJul 14, 2003 15:28:53 | Great answers -- I'm really interested in seeing how many people are gonna be gaming in the Post War of Souls era. Any takers? Peace! |
#14B-naaJul 14, 2003 16:56:18 | Well I'm not exactly sure what I'll be doing when I get the DLCS, there's just so many possibilities. I might focus a campaign on the Minotaur invasion, which could be very interesting. I'd quite like the idea of having Mina, gathering more followers, and preaching against the ways of the Gods. Mina is kind of a loose cannon right now, and I think she'll strike out against pretty much anyone, mortal and God alike, this could put Valthonis in a very nasty situation. Especially when he's preaching things that some people don't want to hear, he maybe very short of friends. Then there's magic, what a state thats in, wonderful isn't it I know some people think that that there will be an conflict between the Wizards of High Sorcery, and the Fifth Age Sorcerors, but I want to go a different route, and give them a common cause so they will work together, but a little bit of tension never hurts does it. Also there's the remaining Dragon lords and Highlords, what to do about them. Well Caramon's suggestion that they stab them with a Dragonlance might be a fun if dangerous goal. At the moment, I don't think I want to game pre-war of souls, while its all very cool, this brave new world is far more exciting. |
#15rooksJul 14, 2003 17:22:39 | B'naa: I agree wholeheartedly! The post WoS setting is the most intense and OPEN period to play in DL! Frankly, I don't care about the old 4th Age. Thats been done and done to death. Great to go back to for short term games and one-shot adventures, but all in all, its blah. I totally agree with your statements on magic - and I'm most excited that there still are a few Dragon Overlords left. I can't wait to see what kind of trouble they come up with. heheh... Peace! |
#16carteegJul 14, 2003 17:32:37 | Right now I'm in the process of running the original 12. The group just 'drowned' in the Blood Sea. Coming up with some in-game reasons to alter some of the rules has turned out to be fun. Example: Branchala was giving bards their spellcasting ability. However, with 4th Age bards having no spellcasting ability (with 5th Age bards using a variation of Sorcery), I had an incident take place where the moons 'eclipsed' Branchala and a few other gods preventing non-cleric/non-lunar magic from taking place. It's added a great dynamic to the game as several characters lost spells. Plus I like the concept of the moons getting p***ed off and 'taking back what's theirs'. But, over time, we're going to continue past the War of the Lance in jumps, keeping our new history, and hopefully over time reaching the War of Souls and going past it.... that is if something doesn't take the world drastically off coarse which in and of itself would be kewl. |
#17zombiegleemaxJul 14, 2003 18:38:02 | I've made my decision (as well as part of an adventure). The first thing I'm going to DM for DL will be an adventure based on Schallsea, starting on the night of the storm (that's right, the storm). Any Knight of Solamnia characters will start by being awoken in the night and sent out with the other knights to help the people of the island, as it says they do in WoS V. I, and from there they'll meet up with the other PCs at appropriate times. They'll go along the coast, encountering NPCs that need saving, and finally, at the last cropping of houses, they'll see a ship at sea, tethered to the docks, and are informed that a man is trapped there. They'll have to get to the boat, using whatever methods they can come up with. (Swimming is an option, though I hope they neglected to bring their Solamnic armor :D ). Anyway, depending on their actions, they'll either save the man and be brought to safety (unlikely), or they'll be tossed about in the sea for a few hours before crashing on the mainland just before morning. From there, the nearest establishments are the village of Nowhere (which is currently around the start of the book Middle of Nowhere) and a [yet unnamed] fishing village. Both are equally distant and the characters will chose on their own. They'll either become involved in the situation brewing in Nowhere, or be led on a string of adventures starting in that coastal village (which has been completely destroyed by the storm ;) ). In this adventure, I'm pleased to be providing 99% more quest-alterring choises than in anything else I've ever DM'd. Yay for DL D20. |
