Lunar Conjunctions

Which of these two ways does the lunar conjunction work?

I am using Last Quarter Waning for both examples. You need the DLCS to understand what I am talking about in example 2.

Example: #1

Is it very broad?

Meaning if Nuitari, Lunitari and/or Solinari are anywhere in Last Quarter Waning together then those moons in Last Quarter Waning are in conjunction.

Example: #2

or is it a little more strict?

Meaning if Nuitari is currently at postion 9, 15 and Lunitari is anywhere from position 7 to 6 (moving counterclockwise) then those two are in conjunction.

Meaning if Nuitari is currently at postion 9, 15 and Lunitari is at position 17 (then those two are in conjunction) and if Solinari is at position 9 or 19 (then all three are in conjunction).

I personally like the 2nd method of being a little more strict, but I really just wanted to clear this up.

Your first example is the right one as far as I know.

I'm afraid I never used the lunar tracking system, since I haven't had a WoHS play at my table. So I'm not much help to you there.

However, I do realize these problems with the lunar boosting to magic.

Players will attempt to delay projects of their own initiative for when they have magical bonuses. So they'd reserve low sanction for crafting magical items and healing themselves up. Thus, you are giving them a potentially unabalancing bonus. If you bring the trouble to them, a DM would probably do it when they are suffering a penalty (especially if they did their adventuring when they had a bonus!) which is a potentially dehabilitating penalty.

So how do you work out these problems? Do you have to make sure that no time passes between adventures (in order for the bonuses and penalties to even out correctly)? Do you simply have to take the moon into account when designing your challenge ratings? How severe is the bonus/penalty in the DLCS for 3e, based on the moon?

At this point my group is trapped behinds enemy lines so to speak, so it is evening out. They have not yet found the way to escape and really do not have any one place that remains secure long enough for them to hideout in for a lengthy period of time, so they are pretty much on the move.

Which is why I think the second method of calculating lunar conjunctions is better.

Wow, are people that overly concerned with balance and codifying everything these days? Back when I started playing, if somehting was too easy, you just sent in a few more kobolds or goblins or what have you. Figuring out the CR and this and that number and making sure everything is balanced just seems a bit too much work for no actual reward. Maybe im crazy.

I for one am not concerned with the balance issue. I just want to run the game fairly and wanted a clarification of the rule.

That's all...in a nut shell.
