I've still got a way to go with my current 3rd ed Dragonlance Campaign, but I've already started putting ideas together for the next one which will use the 3.5 rules.

I'm going to use the invasion idea that someone posted about a while ago, that has appeared in Dragon magazine, but the overall feel that I want is the coming of age for the mortal races. They have been guided for milennia by the gods but its time now for them to grow up and make their own way in the universe.
This will replace the official 5th age in my DL universe, but it will lead to what will be called the Age of Mortals.

Any ideas on what I can do to convey that overall campaign concept throughout the campaign, and where can I lead it to?

Thanx.

Heh. well, the only way i can really see that is to get rid of the gods, or make their powers more reduced. If mortals always have to rely on gods, it will always be like a parent supporting a child instead of a self-sufficient adult leaving the nest and heading out on their own. Personally, I would find it difficult for Krynn to "leave the nest" until it reaches the point of globalization and true unity. Currently, we have minotaurs fighting elves, Titans bleeding Elves, isolationist dwarves, kender everywhere, and draconians beginning their expansion. Until true peace and respect for diversity happens, i think Krynnfolk aren't ready to claim their role in the Age of Mortals.

You might want to go the "star Trek/star gate/spell jammer" route, where Krynnfolk reach a level of power and enlightenment that they gain first contact with other worlds (and whole new places of adventure). Of course the "invaders" would be the arch villians that Krynnfolk are face when liberating other enslaved D&D game worlds.

You might want to simply allow your characters to reach such high levels so that they themselves can take on gods. Oh man, I had fun in my munchkin years. Sometimes Munchkinism reaches it's full infection when you game in sessions where you're a god, but every NPC is just as godly as you are. :-)

Lastly, you could always make the krynnfolk the invaders with their new mysticism and primordial sorcery. Let's start invading FR and GH. Let's run expeditions into Ravenloft and defeat the Powers. We already had alien dragons invading Krynn. Maybe this time, let's take the war to the dragon overlords' homeworld. :-)

You know it gets bad when ascension into godhood is offered to a character, and the response is, "Ew! No chance. Why would I restrict myself down like that?"

Or, "All of the Gods are gone!" Followed by a response of "So? How does affect anything?"

Heheh. yeah. Being a god has major limits. If you were striving to be a good god, you had to listen to the insessent collective whining of entire planetary populations who all pray to you for guidence. "I AM THE UBERGOD OF ALL GOODNESS, EMILY. I DON'T CARE IF YOU HAVE A CRUSH ON JIMMY! MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ON YOUR PLANET ARE HOMELESS AND HUNGRY! JUST MEET HIM BY YOUR LOCKER TOMORROW AND ASK HIM TO THE SPRING FORMAL!!!"

I don't really want to have the gods leave. That was one of my beefs with the official 5th age.

I do want to go the Star Trek/B5 direction and deal with the larger coming of age story. Its all still in the planning stage at the moment, but thats the feel I want without taking away anything from the setting.
