#1zombiegleemaxJul 24, 2003 23:40:19 | Where do they live? Under what mountain? The Gazetteer lists elves as being High, Gray, Wild, Wood or Valley, it must say something about dark elves but i didnt found yet. Could anyone point me where they appear in the gazetteer? Or just some info about them, so i can bring some npc´s out of their cities (but i need to know where do those cities lies). Thanks. (btw, i just hate how 'Drow' sounds, looks like you just let something fall from your hand, it kicked twice in the ground and made this *drow* noise ) |
#2cwslyclghJul 25, 2003 1:04:44 | they live in the underdark... the most detailed city of the dark elves in the world of greyhawk is Erelhei-Cinlu, the infamous Vault of the Drow which lies beneath the northern hell furnaces |

Cwslyclgh is right, biggest drow city is in the northern Hellfurnaces. Try going to Canonfire - hit search - type in drow - check out the listing "A Listing of Drow Vaults in the Flanaess". Hope that helps. Sorry I don't know how to set up a link here to Canon. Good luck. |
#4zombiegleemaxJul 25, 2003 8:27:00 | To my knowledge there isnt a lot detailed on dark elf cities (but Erelhei Cinlu) in Greyhawk, however, I highly recommend the GDQ1-7 module which you can still either buy on Ebay or download off some sites that sell it as a pdf, that more or less the first definitive introduction of drow as a race into D&D. I like them in that setting, theyre right rat-bastards, sneaky, conniving and out for world domination. Somehow those aspects of them seem to have been overshadowed by more contempory versions which depict them as being a lot more personally confrontational and discarded the subtlety and intrigue. There is also a good write up on Erelhei Cinlu in Dragon Magazine #298 which goes into a bit more detail than the GDQ. I guess if you are going to have a drow antagonist then PC's will more often than not meet a series of that particular elf's 'associates' and hirelings for some time before ever meeting their master/mistress who tells them what to do. |
#5ArgonJul 25, 2003 16:32:50 | Even though the Drow were an original GH race, I replaced them with the Derro. My main reason was that FR took everything Drow and SHOVED it down our throats repeatedly and their still going. As such I did'nt feel like the Drow were a pure GH race. The Derro are little used and work better, they are simply Dwarves so far removed from true Dwarven society. It is also rumored that Magic's from the Suel Empire tainted the Derro and they have as much hatred for their own kind (dwarves) as they do for humans. In my campaign the Derro have access to some of the forgotten Suloise magic's. This make's them a very dangerous breed, lucky for humans the Derro cannot function well in sunlight, so they are more often a menace amongst the underdark, were they belong. I also decided to use only two sub-races of Elves in my campaign, one of which are the Valley Elves (Some tribes resemble Grey elves others resemble High Elves) and Grugach (Wild Elves). Keeping a more GH type of Elvin species instead of the same Generic elves present in FR. If you have the Complete book of Elves, 2nd edition then you will enjoy my newest post to canonfire.com just look for it sometime next week. |
#6grodogJul 25, 2003 22:00:00 | If you're looking for an excellent 3e version of Erelhei Cinlu, see Russell Bird's Oerth Journal article "Erelhei-Cinlu, Drow City of Pleasure" by Russell Bird. It appears in issue 14, downloadable from Canonfire! at http://www.greyhawkonline.com/OJ_14.pdf (this issue also contains my interview with Rob Kuntz, FYI, in addition to its other many wonders). The Oerth Journal is a free, fan publication, so you can't beat the price! :D You can also check out Fred Weining's wonderful article "The Vault of the Drow: Dark Elf Metropolis" in Living Greyhawk Journal #14 (appearing in Dragon 298, August 2002). Fred also published a follow-up article entitled "Playing Pieces: Denizens of Darkness" in Living Greyhawk Journal #16/Dragon 300 (October 2002). Fred is one of the co-authors of the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer, so you won't be disappointed if you track down the back issue! I've stolen material both of their articles for use in my own campaign, and incorporated it with my own additions to Gygax's original presentation of D3 Vault of the Drow (which remains one of my favorite of his published adventures). |
#7grodogJul 25, 2003 22:08:02 | Here's the relevant excerpt on drow from Jason Zavoda's wonderful Greyhawk index:Drow {Black Elf}{Dark Elf}[MON] This should help you tracking down drowic mentions in various Greyhawk products. However, I didn't copy any of the named NPC entries---just the generic drow entry---here. This should be a good start, though. Here's the explanation/key for the abbreviations: Encyclopedia Greyhawkania Index Enjoy :D |
