I got DLCS and an apology at GenCon

And I spazzed out like a geeky fanboy when I had promised myself that that wouldn't happen.

There I was at GenCon, nonchalantly meeting people like Sean Astin and Steve Kenson and being cool about the whole ordeal. But then I happened by the Sovereign Press booth and there was Margaret Weis signing autographs... so what do I do? I walk up and clumsily pull my newly purchased DLCS book from my 3.5 satchel and I utter the phrase (and these are the exact, mind-numblingly horrifying words!):

"I would be ever-so-delighted if you would sign this!"

Ever... so... delighted... I said it, and I can't unsay it.

And after she signed her name, I compounded my embarrassment by adding:

"And if you would just add 'Sorry for stepping on Tas!' I would be extraordinarily grateful."

And she gave me a look that I can't describe, but I fear it turned me several shades of red. She added the apology, though, and then I had the good sense to get out of there before I turned into an abject puddle of gloopulon feddle-slime.

27 years old and I whigged out meeting an author... faced with rock stars, actors, artists, and game designers I'm cool as ice, but plop a novelist in front of me and I go to pieces. How lame is that?

I love the book, BTW, even though I'll probably never get to use it.

Hehe...

It's called shock. Different strokes for different folks. I routinely talk on the radio, where thousands hear me. I used to play cello in front of said thousands (ok... hundreds for the cello..) ;)

A lot of people would balk at that. Me? You get me anywhere high, and I'm holding on for dear life. Which is rather ironic, given that I'm as tall as a short Minotaur (6'3").

Don't worry about it. They encounter it all the time, and it doesn't make them think anything odd about you. Matter of fact, if it was odd enough - they might remember you next time just because of it ;)

Isn't Margaret just the greatest. I met her last year when she was pluging Mistress of Dragons and handing out DLCS promo post cards. I was one of the first to the booth on Friday and was THE FIRST to plunk down my cash for my copy of DLCS. As a reward, I had Margaret all to my self...for about 3 minutes.

Unfortunately, since I broke my thigh bone, I spent this entire GenCon in a wheelchair. The only good thing about it was that when I met Larry Elmore on Friday, I was sitting down! As my b/f rolled me up to meet him, I was in soooo much shock that I started feeling light headed and had some serious butterflies in my stomach. I have Raistlin's face from 'The Time of the Twins' tattooed on my back. He loved it and had me show it to everyone working his booth. It took me several minutes to calm down after meeting him..... and then where do we go..... Sovereign Press to meet Margaret and Tracy. Fortunately, I was able to handle myself much better this time and everytime there after.

I am already looking forward to next year. Hopefully I will be able to walk by then. I wish I would have been able to get around better, especially at the DL Q&A . It was good being able to put faces to some of the names on here..... but I was unable to fight the crowd to come up and say hello. I did manage to get Chris to sign both AoM and DLCS, and he spelled my name right! Thanks to everyone I met up there..... and I look forward to seeing everyone next year!
