DS3 rangers - lose spells, gain what?

The only thing I could see that DS rangers gain is the option to take favoured terrain instead of favoured enemy (a cool idea, and one I think should be in core d&d), but they lose all their spells? Are they compensated for the loss, or are they simply left to their own devices. I would think they could at least go back to 1d10 hp per level....or something.

I am curious why they did lose spells. DS still has druids, and rangers are like warrior/druid cross to some extent, why not leave them with the spells?

As far as I know, DS3 rangers have spells back, matching the 3.5 Ranger now. They originally lost it because it was an effort (and IMHO rightly so) to limit the number of spellcasting classes on a low-magic game world, while addressing many problems that spring up with the 3.0 Ranger. 3.5 covers the idea better, and as a result, it had been used instead. The latest docs from athas.org should reflect that.

Ah, right you are then. I can imagine the issue at hand. Dark Sun certainly should be a low magic world, yet you get clerics (arguably more powerful spells than core), druids, rangers and psions (as a source of non arcane supernatural power), you still end up with a lot of classes capable of doing "magic" (terms vary, but supernatural effects). In any case, I look forward to seeing the rvisions then.

I notice in retrospect, the ranger class description does not say lose spells, it's only elsewhere it says that, so maybe they already edited it, at least partly.

Not trying to be rude or anything, but please do a search before posting, this only takes a few seconds on your part.

This question has been answered a few times now, but just to reiterate, yes, we are using the 3.5 Ranger which has spells, the only difference is that he can switch out Favored Terrain with Favored Enemy.
