I read the write up for this guy in the Living Greyhawk web enhancement and thought he was pretty interesting. Can anyone tell me where he first appeared as an NPC in Greyhawk? Was he by chance the personal character of a game designer?

Yes, he's a pregenerated PC for WG6 Isle of the Ape. Not any designer's PC.

Isle of the Ape? Wow, a Gygaxian character. And here I was thinking he was 2e or Planescape. I'll have to track down that module. Thanks, guys.

I always kill him off in my GH games 'cause I find him a bit boring. I mean, he's no Nystul or Tenser or Drawmij or Mordy. And out of the newbies, I find Alhamazad and Jallarzi are interesting whilst Warnes is just... plain. There's nothing really cool or quirky about him. Jallarzi has her psuedodragon familiar, Alhamazad is an old, crotchety bastard and all the others have personality. That, and he's a goody two-shoes.

But that's just my opinion which doesn't count for much. He did manage to kick the crud out of the Weird of the Gnatmarsh though so I guess he's not totally boring.

Where does that Weird of the Gnatmarsh tale come from?

His Isle of the Ape background information mentions it, but there are no real details.

Two weeks ago at the Greytalk chat we were talking about the Weird of Gnatmarsh. I commented that I had always picture that creature looking like the illustration for the Sind monster from the Dragon Magazine Creature Collection #1 (Dragon 89, Sept 1984).

Yes, he was originally a pregenerated character in the Isle of the Ape module (though I don't think he was a PC from the original GH campaign). He was one of a handful that were presented with only a paragraph of tantalizing background information, but have since reappeared in more recent material (like the druid Reynard Yargrove [gender bent] and the thief Rakehill Chert [errr "successful businessman and patriot"]).

I dragged Warnes out of obscurity with Erik Mona's help and incorporated him into Greyhawk's more recent material. I get a kick out of rescuing and recasting throwaway references from the past in my writing for the benefit of new audiences, sometimes so subtlely they go unnoticed.

But to answer your question, I wrote his background in LGJ#0 and probably know as much about him as there is to know. You won't find anything on him in the FtA-era material. If I get the opportunity, I will put up a web enhancement on Canonfire! composed of the material we had to cut out of the article. There are no other references to the Weird of Gnatmarsh in published material.

However, Erik and I are conspiring to perhaps correct that oversight in the pages of Dungeon/LGJ...and you won't be able to accuse us of a "hag"iography.
