#1moosekickedmysisterstoofAug 01, 2003 11:50:58 | I was inspired by another website to make this idea. I wasn't sure which board to post it at, so I posted it here. This my adaption of "monkey pit fighter". Observe. "Monkey fighting" is a bloody sport in which monkeys and apes are given special training to attack and kill one another. Trainers work hard to turn their little crap throwers into knife wielding killing machines. This sport is quite popular. Creating Your Monkey/Ape Monkeys are created like any ordinary PC, with a handful of obvious and not-so-obvious changes: Races Only seven species are listed, though other apes and monkeys can be used too (look them up on the web and give 'em stats). Spider Monkey- Imported from a new world, these relatively small monkeys are quite agile and have a fully prehensile tail which can be used to grasp an extra weapon or shield. Special: This tail functions effectively as a third arm. It does, however, receive the standard offhand penalties if used in conjunction with another attack. Chimpanzee- This ape is the smartest primate(aside from humanoids) as well as the most versatile. Can wear some human armor and wield standard weapons. Gorilla- The largest living ape, this fearsome primate is best known for its exceptional strength, surprising cunning, and deadly fighting prowess. Special: +4 to Intimidate checks. Orangutan- These lanky apes are larger than chimpanzees, but more expensive. Males grow plate-like faces as they age. Proboscis- A long nosed monkey of moderate size. Has remarkable proficiency in swimming and diving. Baboon- A strong plains-based monkey with a dog-like muzzle and well-rounded stats. Howler- A New World monkey named for its piercing howls. Very nimble in the trees. Special: A howler monkey can howl for a round. Opposing monkeys in a 30’ radius must make a Will save (DC 13)or become distracted and inactive for one round. This action is allowed once per combat, but the howler can take no other actions while howling. Also, a howler monkey can use its prehensile tail to hold weapons or shields just as effectively as a spider monkey. Statistics: RACE STR DEX CON INT WIS CHA Size Nat. AC Base Price Spider 5 17 10 2 12 5 T +0 100gp Chimp 15 15 13 2 12 6 M +2 150gp Gorilla 18 10 15 2 13 7 L +3 500gp Orang. 16 15 13 2 13 11 M +2 200gp Prob.M. 8 14 11 2 12 5 S +1 100gp Baboon 15 15 12 2 12 4 M +2 250gp HowlerM. 6 16 11 2 12 4 T +0 100gp All monkeys have a movement of 30ft, climb 30ft, with the exception of the baboon which has a base land speed of 40ft and the proboscis monkey which can swim at 20ft. Chimps, orangs, and spider monkeys can also brachiate (as per the feat) at half their climb speed. Skills Many skills that are suitable for normal PC races are suitable for fighting monkeys. The following skills can be developed: Balance (all monkeys and apes receive a +8 racial bonus to balance checks, with the exception of gorillas who get a +4) Climb (all monkeys and apes receive a +8 racial bonus to climb checks) Hide Intimidate (Strength is the relevant attribute because of the monkeys/apes low charisma scores) Jump Listen Move Silently Pick Pocket Search Spot Swim (proboscis monkeys receive a +6 racial bonus to swim checks) Tumble Use Rope Distract (Class skill for rogues, cross class for others. DEX based. If distract check beats target’s opposing will save target is distracted and flat-footed for 1 round. Can be used on multiple opponents but each opponent receives a bonus to its save equal to the number of targets) Disallowed skills are those that, while a monkey might be trained to perform them, are not suitable for a pit fighting monkey. The GM may opt to allow certain skills. Alchemy Animal Empathy Appraise Bluff Craft Decipher Script Diplomacy Disable Device Disguise Escape artist Forgery Gather Info Handle Animal Heal Innuendo Intuit Direction Knowledge Open Lock Perform Profession Read Lips Scry Sense Motive Speak Language Spellcraft Use Magic Device Wilderness Lore Feats All feats are available to monkeys, with the exception of leadership feats, item creation feats, the whole expertise pathway (due to Intelligence), and spell mastery. Below are a few monkey feats: Monkey Pounce: You can make dangerous leaping attacks from above. Prerequisite: Dex 14+, Offensive Leap, Base attack bonus +3 or greater. Benefit: When beginning your attack at a higher altitude than your opponent, you may leap down on them in conjunction with an attack. The attack receives a +2 damage bonus, and if it hits your opponent is knocked to the ground unless he makes a reflex save (DC=damage dealt). You must make a similar reflex save (DC 15) or fall to the ground as well. The maximum range jumped horizontally is based on your jump skill (which can be used in conjunction). If a large vertical distance is involved you may take damage as per standard rules, but if your opponent is struck they absorb half the damage taken by you. Offensive Leap: You can make leap attacks with deadly accuracy. Prerequisite: Dex 14+, Base attack bonus +1 or higher. Benefit: You may make a leaping attack at your opponent that grants you a +2 bonus to hit as a charge would but does not have to be in a straight line (you don’t change in midair, just jump at the last minute). You receive the -2 AC penalty associated with a charge and defensive weapons set to receive a charge will apply to you. Grasping Tail: Lets a monkey use a weapon in its tail without penalty. Prerequisite: Prehensile tail. Benefit: This functions like ambidexterity but applies to a monkey with a prehensile tail. The -2 offhand penalty for the tail is eliminated, but two-weapon fighting penalties still apply unless the two-weapon fighting feat is taken. Deadly Cartwheel: The monkey can perform a spinning cartwheel, attacking multiple opponents. Prerequisite: Dex 13+, Dodge, Mobility Benefit: An unarmed monkey can perform a death cartwheel and make an unarmed attack on every opponent adjacent to the monkey’s pathway (a number of squares up to the monkey’s move). However, opponents can make attacks of opportunity against the death cartwheeling monkey if they are armed. They do not get attacks of opportunity against the cartwheeling monkey when the monkey moves out of threat range during the death cartwheel. Cannot be performed in medium or heavy armor. Defensive Backflip: The monkey can make an evasive backflip, avoiding an enemy’s attack. Prerequisites: Dex 15+, Dodge, Mobility, Base attack bonus +4 or higher Benefit: When you are attacked in melee combat you can make a defensive backflip to avoid the attack provided there is an empty square adjacent to you in the opposite direction from you as the attacker. You gain a +4 AC bonus against the attack and move into the empty square when the attack is complete. Cannot be performed in medium or heavy armor. Feces Throwing: You can defecate in your hand and use it as a projectile. Prerequisites: Monkey/Ape as race Benefit: By taking a move-equivalent action to defecate, you are able next round to make a ranged touch attack to propel the feces into your opponent's eyes in an attempt to temporarily blind them. If the attack is successful, the opponent must make a fortitude save ( DC equal to 10+HD+Con Mod) or be blinded by 1d4 rounds. Rancid Feces: Your diet consists of harsh materials that, in turn, makes your feces especially rancid. Prerequisites: Monkey/Ape, Feces Throwing. Benefit: Feces throwing attack causes one additional round of blindness and one acid damage. Rend: When you hit with both of your claw attacks, you can tear your opponent's flesh apart. Prerequisites: Str 16+, Base attack bonus +4 or higher. Benefit: Whenever you hit an opponent with both of your claw attacks, you have the option of ripping the foe's flesh for double claw damage. Pedal Dexterity: You are adept at using your feet to wield weapons. Prerequisites: Monkey/Ape as race, Dex 15+ Benefit: This functions like ambidexterity but applies to a monkey using it feet to. The -2 offhand penalty for the monkey's feet is eliminated, but two-weapon fighting penalties still apply unless the two-weapon fighting feat is taken. EQUIPMENT Monkeys, when purchased, come with no equipment. The owner can, however, equip his monkey with any of the standard equipment. Armor Special attention must be paid to monkey size, as standard armor does not fit all monkeys. Small and medium monkeys can get armor that functions identically to standard armor, but it costs 50% more than standard armor due to strange proportions. Chimps can buy armor for standard cost. Tiny Monkeys wear armor that costs the same amount as standard armor, but has half the protection (round to the better value) and has 1/10 the weight. Gorilla armor costs 250% normal and weighs twice as much as standard armor. Natural Attacks All monkeys have a natural attacks that can be made as attacks with normal weapons (i.e. without attacks of opportunity). These are as follows (add STR bonuses too): Monkey Primary Secondary (-5 to hit 1/2 STR bonus) Spider Bite 1d2 Claw 1d2 Chimp Slam 1d3 Bite 1d4 Gorilla Slam 1d6 Bite 1d6 Orang. Slam 1d3 Bite 1d4 Prob. Claw 1d2 Bite 1d3 Baboon Bite 1d6 Claw1d4 Howler Bite 1d3 Claw1d2 Weapons Monkeys trained in a PC or NPC class with weapon proficiencies may implement weapons. Standard rules for weapon/creature size should be closely noted. Cost for smaller weapons is at least the cost for standard weapons, range increments and criticals and type are identical as well (I wanted to make guns, but I have no idea how to govern them). The damage values and weights for some size variants of standard weapons are below: Weapon Size Damage Weight Mace T 1d4 2 lb. Club T 1d3 1/2 lb. Club S 1d4 1 lb. Morningstar S 1d6 4 lb. Dart T 1 0 lb. Javelin S 1d4 1/2 lb. Axe S 1d6 4 lb. Sword S 1d6 3 lb. Pick T 1d3 1 lb. Hammer S 1d4 4 lb. Dagger T 1d4 1/2 lb. Gauntlets T 1d4/1d4 3 lb. Monkey Training When first imported for foreign lands, monkeys are untrained. Their raw value is the base cost for the species listed in the race section. These monkeys do not have a class, and must be trained to the basic level in order to gain skills, feats, and class abilities. Training a monkey requires a successful Handle Animal check (DC who cares?). But enough of this technical mumbo-jumbo! This idea is just for fun and shouldn't require a gigantic amount of thought. Potential monkey trainers start out with 200gp to get them started, though they can acquire more money by winning bets, stealing, and any other way you can get money without actually earning it through honest work. Money can be used for buying an expensive monkey or several smaller monkeys or for buying weapons and armor. Just have fun with this idea! Rules for Monkey Fights There aren't any. You can make some if you want, but I wouldn't advise it. Your probably thinking that there should be rules for fights since some of the monkeys are weaker than others and therefore shouldn't be pitted against more powerful primates. My solution is pit the more powerful monkey against multiple foes(for example, one gorilla versus three baboons). When fighting, the player uses his or her monkey as if it were any other DnD character. Arenas Arenas vary, but most include places for the monkeys to climb on. Some arenas are flooded, making combat more difficult for most monkeys (except the proboscis). Other arenas contain spiked pits, fire vents, tar pools, and richety old rope bridges. I hope you enjoy this idea. Please give your comments as well as ideas for new monkeys, new feats, and new arenas. Please reply. Thanks! |

#3moosekickedmysisterstoofMar 13, 2006 14:11:51 | Well, it WAS going to be a game. Unfortunately, I haven't worked on anything for it for quite some time. If you would be interested in reviving it, feel free. - Johnny |
